I just finished a Black Badge course and am looking at competing in a qualifier coming up in a couple weeks. I have a holster issue though.

  • I am buying a CZ Shadow from someone in Manitoba but in all likelihood it won't come in time or be transferred for the August 19th qualifier match
  • the gun I used in the course is a Norinco NP22 (Sig P226 clone) which I am familiar with so I can do the qualifier with it no problem
  • however, the holster I have -- a cheapo Fobus -- is unsuitable for the actual competition. I got the gun stuck in it twice when I tried to jam it down enough to shield the trigger. So it's a no go.

Is there a holster that will work for both the NP22 and the Shadow so that I don't have to buy twice?

You could probably use one of the generic nylon holsters patterned for "large auto" (Uncle Mikes Sidekick, Bianchi M12). But... You'd really be at a disadvantage in competition as they tend not to draw well. And they tend to have a retaining strap (if it's on the holster, you must use it), which makes it even slower.

Personally, I would buy a dedicated competition-suitable holster for the Sig clone and then sell it when your Shadow arrives. I've done more than a few club nights with the cheapo Fobus holster you can get for $20 (or less) on Ebay. Even if you shelled out for a Bladetech, you probably won't lose all that much on it when you resell it.

You'll probably want to start looking around for a Shadow holster now, as they can be hard to come by. Great selection at

Actually, I just dealt with some Shadow holster issues myself. DSTactical is/was out of all Shadow related stuff as of two days ago, however they may have more before the 19th.
I ended up ordering mine from Freedom Ventures. $37 for the ITAC holster and $27 for the ITAC mag pouches. I paid a little extra and they gave me 2-3 day express post. They do have SIG 226 ones too.
Hope that helps.
Cheers!

alpining, the holster I already have for the Norc (that gave me all the trouble ) is a Fobus. I probably will wander out to Dave's (DStactical) this weekend and see what they have. I just hope I can resell the one for the Norc after I replace it.

Okay seeing what Freedom Ventures has it looks like the ITAC (ITAC-SIG226) paddle holster for the Norc is pretty cheap. I'll probably just buy that for now and then sell it with the Norc later.

And then do my research on the Shadow holster after my qualifier.

Glad that helped. I also ordered an IMI holster from ebay. They're the Israeli Defense ones, free shipping, detachable mag holder and pretty rad reviews. I'll let you know what both are like when they arrive if you want. Or you can even try them out sometime.

I went ahead and ordered the ITAC-P226 one from Freedom Ventures. Hopefully I have no problems with getting it on time or I'm screwed.

I'm at Poco too. BTW, the Black Badge is supposed to count as the holster course at the club since we shoot a lot more rounds than the holster course. However, I understand the drill is somewhat different.

I had heard that :) We just didn't wanna jump in head first to Black Badge if we weren't going to commit. With the way our schedules have been, I'm not sure we could guarantee making it into a match, then we'd have to pay again and start over.
With the in-house one, we'd only need to re-test if we let our range memberships lapse for over a couple of years.
I can't imagine not enjoying any of the styles of competition though!

I like to imagine that the Fobus holster is designed that way. Snatchproof, right?:D

Actually, after really focusing on my draw, getting the first part of the drawstroke pure vertical, that Fobus holster worked really well. I did get a bit of a rotator cuff injury while working that out, though... I now use a Bladetech DOH for IPSC, and it's frickin magic.

BTW, because they are hand molded, these Kydex holsters all have slightly different shapes, even within the same model. It's best to try a few with your particular pistol to get the precise engagement/release feel that you're looking for.

Saw Sean (Freedom Ventures) yesterday at the IPSC Nationals here at Brandon when I was busy trolling the vendor tent. Lots of neat stuff for sale and great prices, especially from Jo Brook (Thanks Travis).

So, me'n the missus completed our course today. Upon further review, testing, and more indernets searching, the ITAC holster is the IMI holster minus the detachable single mag pouch.
All in all, worked great! If you ever want to try before you buy, let me know.

So you went with the IMI holster? what holster do people like most for the shadow? and did you order online or is it easier to just go through your local gun shop?

sorry, newbie here.. lookin to jump in head first into IPSC but i want to make sure i go about it the right way. Any info would be great.

p.s. sorry to hijack this thread..

Couldn't tell you what most people do, as I'm a newbie myself.
I guess it would depend on what you prefer. The options I found for the Shadow were the BladeTech, CR Speed and the ITAC/IMI. I think there's a Fobus out there too.
If you're going IPSC, and don't mind the cost, CR Speed might be a more desireable option for you. If you want friction only, or top strap/friction, go with BladeTech.
I opted for the lever release type, hence the ITAC.
