Gents,

Have a bit of a problem on my hands. Ran into a friend of a friend last week who had a rifle he wanted to sell. A Winchester Model 70 sitting in a Plester Ultimate Varminter stock. 7mm Rem Mag with scope mounts but no iron sights. Says it is virtually brand new and says $200 is all he wants. You sure that's all you want? Yup he says. Well I need a new deer rifle so we shake on the deal.

So I commit to buy sight unseen and when I got it today it turns out to be a 1976 (S/N based) Model 70 with the iron sights removed but the holes not plugged. Lots of wear on the jewelled bolt, pencil barrel, rifling is still VG, no bottom metal due to the Plester stock, hardened grease under the original stock line.

My question is: What frickin model is it? I can't finds any info on Model 70's with a jewelled bolt, iron sights and in 7mm Rem Mag for that time period. Did I still do OK for $200 plus a case of beer for delivery? We both walked away happy but my jubilation faded when I got the gun in hand and it wasn't as advertised. Can anyone help on what model it is and where I can get parts for it?

With a grave dissappointment like this, I'd go back to sniffing the gal at work....... :D
I had a Winchester Model 70 a few years ago with the jewelled bolt.
Dang if I can remember if it had sights on it or not.
Age era similar to yours.

Quiet you! :D

I am still happy with the deal, it was just not as advertised. I left out the part about being told it had a heavy barrel too.

i'd say you did at least "fair " for 200- and not having the holes plugged saves you a step at least as far as replacing the sights goes- you can probably still get all the parts you need from western gun parts, edmonton or any reputable dealer- look at it this way- with the rifling in half decent condition, what does a NEW model 70 cost?- granted ,that in no way reflelcts what you have, but what does ANYTHING in magnum cost?- personally, i'd see how it shoots, then decide whether i want to do anything to it , but i'd replace those irons FIRST - i like a set of back-ups on any hunting rifle-

For $200 your way ahead of the game. Sell the stock order up a Boyd's or B&C or a mcmillian and rock on, that's assuming that it shoots half decent as is. You could have a barreled action for nothing when it's all said and done.

I will shoot it in a bit and find out how she works. You might be right about the barreled action after all is said and done. Might find an aftermarket barrel and just use the receiver.

I might have some sites that would fit that too. Pm if your interested I'll look this weekend.

Definetly. We will talk.

In the condition you describe you did alright, wasn't a steal but your bum shouldn't be hurting. Great project barreled action if you have something in mind for a rebuild.

Filler screws will plug the threaded holes in the barrel. Jeweled bolts were common on M-70's of that erra. Hardened grease is away better than hardened "rust".
Take her out to the range and see what she does. If a rebuild is not your cup of tea put her on the EE.

Put it this this way for $200 bucks it is certainly not a major investment, although at this time to you it is a major disappointment.

A classic case of it seems to good to be true it probably is.

Thinking back to those days, it was probably an M-70 XTR Magnum which did come in 7 mag.

I happen to have a pile of Win 70 parts for an XTR 70 7mag including a minty barrel.Need a stock? Mine was the fixed blind magazine model.Changed to .338 and hinged floorplate now.

I'm betting its a winchester westerner, they where made in the early 70's between 1974&1976 and had no bottom plate. They where made in 300 win and 7mm. My son has a 300.

In my opinion not a bad deal at all. As has been said, You can pick up a better stock or advertise for an original 70 stock and bottom metal. You'll still be into a 7 mag for around $400 and you can sell the old stock to cut costs. Purists frown a the push feed model 70's but they are a decent rifle and usually shoot well.
