So I've been bitten once again by the m14 bug. This will be my second M14 and Im gonna turn it into a fun little project.

Ive got my name on the list for the next batch of Blackfeather stocks! I should have it by the start of September.

For this build I wanna make good use of iron sights. So one of the first steps will be to get new iron sights to replace the norc ones. I have seen that the new shortys from CanAm have really tall front sight blades, man is that ever ugly.

What are my options for replacing the irons on a shorty norc?

If i order a new front sight from brownells will it be tall enough to replace the front sight on the CanAm shorty?

What about the Dlask m14 Adustable Gas Block. If I got one of those can i just put a springfield NM front sight on it? Im just new to iron sights I've always gone optics, thats why the whole tall front sight blade on the shortys is throwing me off.

Any help is appreciated, pics are even better.

Also for the rear sight. Am i better off getting the complete rear sight from the italian connection? Or ordering the parts off Brownells.

I will be basing my build off the 50calshooter thread, I really like how his turned out except i will be putting it in a Blackfeather stock with a UBR.

I got the complete bm59 sight from “the Italian connection “The rear sights are nice. Really well machined, click positively, have a fine aperture that dosent move around like my norc sights liked to do..And the front blade he sells will work nicely on your Shorty ,It sits as tall as the standard Norc Shorty ears and looks well proportioned compared to the stock norc ones
…All that for $70-80 shipped depending where the dollar is at

yah mine look as if they were painted at one time ...nothing a little poly stripper didnt fix and some permablue

got to remember these are surplus units from the late 50's/60s and a little touch up mine looks like new

The factory shorty threads for the flash suppressor are the same 3 splined arrangement we have been used to. SAI makes a brake which is frequently sold on the EE Forum by spcamno. Go and do a search for his stuff!

I love the new shorty rifles too...

I looked but i can't really find the answer, what is the thread pitch on the norc m14 rifles that we are used to?

Im contemplating getting one, but i would like to know what my options are for an aftermrket break. Otherwise i might have to go with a full length norc and then get it chopped down and threaded to accept the break that I'm after.

Without directly answering the question, the thread pitch is to mate with the norinco nut that retains the flash suppressor. No known flash suppressor or brake threads onto this thread. The thread is used only for retaining the splined suppressors.
 
As Hungry mentioned check with SPcamno on here as he sells the Springfield Armory ones for $100 I believe.
Brownells used to sell them to us crazy canucks but no longer:mad:
I just picked up my 3rd one off the EE ($70 shipped)

The Flash hiders and brakes are held on by 3 splines cut into the barrel and a castle nut and allen head screw .
Others have cut their barrels down shorter and threaded the end to accept different muzzle brakes and I believe the comman thread pitch used for that is 28 TPI by 1/2 .

If money is no object and you are lucky pick up one of these as they are splined as well ..Smith Enterprize (really good brake)

I'm thinking about threading an M14 barrel. But by my calculations with 1/2-28tpi threads and a 308 bore (1/28"=.0357x0.54=0.019 thread depth, 0.498-0.308=0.19"/2=0.095-0.019=0.076" thick) 1/2-28 tpi threads leave only about a .076 thick barrel left. Could that pose any problem?
 
Check with 45ACPKING on this as I havn,t done it ....the barrel in the pic was a regular length barrel and it has a thicker dimension at the 18.5 in mark where it was cut down than at the end near the flash hider .

Can't see how that can help, as you machine it down to 1/2" for the 1/2-28 flash hiders. If it was thicker, you could thread it for a larger diameter like 9/16 or 5/8" at the flash hider and have a thicker cross section between the bore and the threads. 30 cal bore in a 1/2" diameter doesn't leave much left.

How do those two breaks comPare to each other? Does one offer more recoil reduction than the other?

I heard the SEI break is awesome but really loud?
 
All the brakes are loud hehehe there's no getting away from that

As for the 1/2 x 28 TPI thread being safe to use on an M305 barrel at the 18.5" mark? The modification has been done to more than 175 barrels that have passed across my bench, more thru clinics and even more by other custom shops. If a problem arose, you KNOW we would read about it here or elsewhere on the net.

Not all brakes are loud near the shooter. Certain company's like Dlask or ATRS have certain brakes that can throw the sound away from your shooting position.
 
I beleive you would have to get the full length one and have it cut .
I could be wrong but that would be the first time ...lol
If you have a factory made Shorty..Why not get a Springfield Armory or Smith Enterprize one that has the 3 splines in it .
