Olympic no Show

Are you suggesting that my tax dollars be spent on someone else's hobby?
Yes, with the disclaimer that someone who started as a mere hobby shooter has actual & proven aspirations to eventually compete in offical matches and climbs that ladder of self improvement within a reasonable timeframe.
If a country wants to bask in the limelight of gold medal olympians, the least they can do is support thier efforts to do so IMO.

its winter 8 months of the year here, if you want support sign up for a winter sport or get a good paying job and support yourself
or go to a US college where sports mean something and find one that excels in the the sport you want to do
a lot of the USAMU were shooters before thay joined the military and were recruited from whatever program they were in

You want to see Canadians in the Olympics? They have to pay their way as many other do in so many smaller countries that DO get there. I want to shoot an Euro or World FITASC, I pay my way to get there! Forget about somebody giving you candy! Pay and make it happen! BTW, If you are good, you WILL get help from the gunmakers! I have seen it this weekend!

"Golf is another sport that is a dying breed and without participation from our government getting youth involvement the sports will slowly fade away to nothing."

The sooner it dies the better !

We will need more young people in the sport. My club has a fair amount of younger shooters. Not many get involved in skeet though. They try trap first, then eventually wind up at the rifle or pistol range.

We don't have international Skeet or Bunker at the club. The older fellas have no interest in it. The younger guys think it sounds cool, but in the end, people want to break targets. They don't want something that's more challenging, and sadly, nobody has the money to get into such a sport.

The machines for the Bunker run about $70000 for a complete set up, plus the trap house, the shooting stands etc. You have to throw a lot of clays to pay for that. I have run the bunker for other shooters in DeWinton and have shot the bunker in Vancouver. You really have to have the will to shoot that game and get good. Great way to become a millionaire, but you might have to start as a billionaire.

Great way to become a millionaire, but you might have to start as a billionaire.

Having shot the game quite seriously for over a year now, I agree it is a great way of turning a billionaire into a millionaire. There is no way to make money at bunker. The top shooters in the world make only about $100k from sponsorships after a lifetime shooting and that is maybe 4-5 guys in the world. Betting etc only happens at smaller shoots in Italy.

It is seriously difficult to establish an international standard without professional coaching, and that is an expense that is pretty large. Bunker competitions are rare in North America so travel expenses are much more than guys shooting ATA if you want good tournament experience (which is critical, practice rounds are nowhere near enough). It is not quite so capital intensive as racing cars etc but certainly most of the guys who go all the way tend to have a lot of family backing or are independently rich. For the rest of us, it involves a lot of sacrifice.

There is almost no support from the federal government. It's pay your own way pretty much all the way to the podium, other than small sponsorships you manage to gather along the way. It can be done, as Cernegoraz from Croatia proved this week with his gold medal, beating out a perfect qualifying score by the legendary two-time gold medalist Michael Diamond of Oz.
