Hi all. I was wondering if you could all do me a favour? I'm looking for case head measurments on 6.5x55 brass. I have privi and S&B (both .477") I'm looking for hornady and remington measurments if possible. Thanks in advance for any and all help

IM pretty sure you will find them the same as in most North Amercan standard brass, I was surprised S&B turned out like that since its Euro. Norma and Lapua are made to prope specs and have correct measurement which is .480 (from memory, not near my caliper or cases). Ill take a look at the remington brass I have later on but Ill bet its in the .473-476 range.

i measured abunch ofcases i have . ( these are all at least once fired , only neck sized )

norma is running .475 - .476

federal is running .473 with the odd one close to .474

remington is .472 -.473 ( about 5 thou larger than the remington 30-06 brass i have )

just because i had it handy ( and because i believe it is theonly other case out there that isa few thou larger than the " 30-06 standard " ) , the privi 9.3x62 brass i have measures .474

hope this helps ....

American manufacturers use the .308 Win. head diameter, .473", and the European companies that are in countries signatory to CIP, use the correct dimension, which is
.480".

Peter

X2! This is correct in my experience.
.473-.474 for domestic production.
.479-.480 for European production.
Eagleye.

I've seen Winchester, Frontier and Remington brass from .470" to .473" at best.

CIP's (2007 std) base dimension for the case is 12.20mm (0.480") MAX, -0.10mm being the MIN dimension (means, 12.10mm or 0.4764"). Most Euro brass is within 0.477" / 0.478".

I have 2 different SAAMI dimensions sheets one showing (brass) base diemension of 0.4770" MAX - 0.008" MIN (means 0.469" MIN....) - from the 206 Z299.4-1992 standard.

The other one (issued 7/28/1993) shows the brass base diameter as being 0.4782" MAX -0.008" 9so, MIN is still 0.4702").

Go figure. Then, wonder why the US 6.5X55 loaded ammo is so weak...

After discussing this last year I found some Norma brass and stopped reloading undersize brass (win and rp that I had) in my Tikka. It just didnt' make sense to me anymore.

Thanks for all the answers guys. The reason I ask is I am building an Xbolt 6.5x55 on a 30-06 action and The S&B brass I have is a little tight in the bolt head. And I was wondering if I just went with a Hornady or Remington brass i could save from having to mess with the bolt at all.

Of course, if you're looking at the case head itself, the 6.5 cases are bigger than the 30-06 cases.

SAAMI claim 0.479" - 0.010" and .480" - 0.010" for the flange diameter (head)

CIP says .480" -0.010" for the 6.5X55

SAAMI's Std '06 case head (flange) is 0.473" - 0.010"

in your case win/rem would be best if you dont' want to play witht he bolt face. I found Winchester better out of the two.
