Looking for some guidance from the folks with more experience than me. I'm in the market for a .223 or similar and I'm starting to shop now. Right now I'm leaning towards a Savage Axis XP in stainless. Anyone have any other suggestions for a budget .223 or other smaller caliber rifle? It'll be used for plinking and small game (gophers) as well as the occasional coyote.

Savage should suit your needs. Consider a Stevens if you think you might want to upgrade it down the road.

I'm looking for a budget model that is still respectable I've heard good things about the Savage. I held one and the fit and finish seemed fine. Which Stevens model and what do you mean upgrade...what's available?

Stevens 200 comes in different calibers. Some day you might want to put on a new barrel, stock etc and it is upgradeable. I don't think there is much for the Axis line.

The Stevens 200 or a more expensive savage will have a slightly different design than the Axis which opens a door to a large selection of aftermarket stocks. The Stevens and the other savages use the same action so the stocks are interchangeable but the Stevens does not have the accutrigger that the model 10/11 ect are equipped with.

What kind of budget do you have?

Tompson Center has a econ.model as does Marlin (7xs i think) They are both rated as accurate. I would pick any over the axis. The Savage 11/111 are reasonable price & are better than the axis or Steven200 IMHO. No point in buying cheep then replace it later. A Good gun will last a lifetime so pick well & enjoy. Good luck AJ

check out the T/C venture line and the malrin XS7 line for budget minded hunting rigs. i've owned two of each T/C's in .270 and .308, two axis .308 and malin XS7 and XL7 in .243 and 30/06. still have a T/C venture in .270 and marlin XS7 in .243. the marlin and T/C line have adjustable triggers where the axis doesn't (but you can buy an aftermarket rifle basix trigger for the axis). palm swell on the axis is very small compared two other rifles. like others have said, you should go check out a couple of different models before making your dicision. i ordered both the axis i owned online and didn't like them at all once i started shooting them, they were accurate but uncomfortable for me.

There is a Browning A-bolt in the EE right now along with a Remington 700 as well.
They where well within easy budget and good guns for your intended purpose IMO, others will have different opinions though.

Savage Axis in 223.

not bad shooters.

One good thing about the savage 223 is the 1-9" twist. Makes the 223 in to a deep threat where the more common 1-12" twist is limited to bullets 60gr and less.

I'd take a Stevens 100 times before I got an axis but it's still not a 700.

Mine shoots just under an inch with my reloads, but I put a Rifle basix trigger on it because of the poor trigger. NOw I love it.

Yeah I need to do some trigger work. This was first day at the range I got the combo from WSS on sale for 249.00 ish. I cant complain.

I pulled the one flyer on my 3rd shot.
