Just looking for some friendly advice so please don,t bite my head off.
Last week i purchased a shorty M305 from a reputable dealer in the lower mainland. Has bayonet lug,FS is not welded on.Has a nice ping when i drop the bolt.So far so good.
Then i field strip it and notice op rod out of alignment with gas tube by 3/16"
closer inspection reveals that front sight is canted to the left and bump at center of feed ramp is at 5:45.
Now i like the retailer and i,m just wondering what a "reasonable" level of issues these rifles have?
Should i take it back or will i just end up slicing open the bag on yet another
out of index rifle?
Would love to go to an M14 clinic but i think i just missed the last local one.
Is there anyone who is proficient with these rifles on the island or lower mainland?(I work in Vancouver, live on the island)

There are no dedicated M14 smiths in western canada except one ;)
We are in the midst of hammering out a date for the next lowermainland M14 clinic, probably gonna be mid to late september from the looks of my fishin and hunting schedule
 
There is a long time M14 Guru who's knowledge goes back several decades who happens to live on Vancouver Island..........Unfortunately he is banned from here........:( ....So PM Sent.....
 
Anyhow, you want a quality smith to work on your M14 (my shop is swamped big time) , Casey at Tac Ord or Doug at Ellwoods Epps.
Skully, you really should come out to one of our clinics ;)

I have the same issues.
Shipping to Epps or Tac Ord is not an option.
Sucks that there's no one in BC's Lower Mainland that can do work on these guns. I wonder how many of us here are kinda "stranded".
 
clinic, september, I'll announce it in the events and gatherings forum in a week or so.
it may be small, 12 to 15 guys, surrey location, one day. let's not hijak this thread on the subject but, keep an eye out on events and gatherings or p.m. me and i'll add you to the clinic folder.

If I get Some "free" time at work I may try to fabricate a barrel vise & receiver wrench.........so us Lower Mainland guys aren't stranded......;).....It's nice when you have access to a fully equiped machine/metalshop..........:D

I've got a few crappy tools we can use Skullboy. I'll come over to help out....between the two of us we should be able to figure one of these rifles out :rolleyes:
 
satain has a wicked set up but his account is frozen.
i will be in surrey, with my tools on saturday afternoon, on my way to the west coast to fish hali and chinooks for 5 or 6 days out of nootka sound. sorry island guys, the tools will be in surrey so no clinic this time :(
when i get back from the trip i may have time to help a couple guys out on the sunday if it's just indexing. I'll post here if I'll have time for a couple drop ins while i'm puttin the new bumper and 10,000lbs winch on the dodge at tony g's shop in surrey before i wheel home to 100 mile house
 
So when the barrel is fixed and the front sight is more crooked than before (like mine) do you simply re-thread the barrel and get aftermarket sights or is it possible to re-slot so the flash hider isn't sitting like 10 degrees to the right

are the barrel splines(slots that the flash hider slides into) not straight?
or,probably your flash hider/front sight mount casting is improperly cast.

by the way for the OP,correct me if i'm wrong but i believe the position
(5:45) of your barrel --a few degrees to the right of straight down,would mean your barrel is over-indexed...

i've done a few garands and m305/m14s's and i redid a shorty m305 that had
an overindexed barrel.so it seems that indexing is a problem on these rifles.
oh BTW,i bought an m14s (2007 model) in person and it took me 3 rifles to
find a properly indexed one...
