Nice old rifles I have known.

H4831: Do we just PM you regarding your book or is this available online somewhere, etc? Sounds like a good read.

I have noticed that many of the “Nice old rifles” noted throughout this thread are Winchester lever guns in some interesting calibers. The rifle I knew shared some of these same characteristics. It belonged to my Grandfather’s older brother. It was a model 1895 Winchester in 303 British. The first high power center fire rifle I ever pulled the trigger on.

My Great Uncle was in his late ‘80’s at the time and was kind enough to let me use the rifle. It had been well used but also well taken care of. It was my Great Uncle’s pride and joy. I would love to know how many deer had been taken with it but those secrets are long gone.

It had hardly any bluing left on it and had been coated with some type of varnish or shellac to provide a bit of weather proofing. It sported a peep sight and it was a great shooter. It was also the most awkward and hateful rifle to carry that I have ever had my mitts on. That big fixed steel box magazine was positioned right at the balance point of the rifle. That made it awkward. In cold weather, that steel box magazine would freeze my fingers. That made it hateful. But I came to love that old rig, warts and all. I wish I could hunt with it again.

I like reading your stories H, I'll have to pick up one of your books one day.

Get it!

His book on his days flying the bush is a treasured book of mine. :)

Bruce. when he stopped flying. knew that you can only roll the dice so many times before crapping out. My eyes got bleury when he tells when he decided to keep his feet on the ground.

I have a Yank buddy here in the upper Gatineau Valley who spent all of 2010 in Afghanistan mentoring the locals in border security. He came back at the end of 2011 - the $$$$ was good, but, he did not want to roll one too many times, some of his buddies stayed too long.:(

So PM Bruce and buy his book!
