If you could only have one

I'd have to sell what I have a go with a Tikka or Sako in 7mm win mag for hunting. And I'd keep the Bell and Carlson stock for Tikka I have and I'd top with nice optics like a 4.5-14 Leupold with ao or Ziess 4.5-14.

The Mauser 98 6.5x55 was my best moose/deer rifle, the downside is the ammo is too hard to find.

My choice would have to be the CZ 527 223rem. covers everything from deer down to gophers, cheap ammo and easy to find.

This is just my 2 cents, I don't own these rifles anymore, sold them, and every other calibre in between. No really.. :)

Because I live in Ont. I would opt out for a cartridge in 6.5 x ? - Mauser action, wood stock , scope + irons. JMHO --- John303.

That's easy...My CZ452 Scout .22 and all the ammo I can carry.
There is no critter in North America that can't be dropped with one well
placed pill from a .22 at the right distance. Elephants have been dropped
with one shot from this cartridge back in the day by folks who knew the anatomy of their quarry.

Sorry, nope can't do it. :p

NAA.

Agreed.

One rifle would be woefully inadequate. Ideally would have:

.17 HMR heavy barrel - gophers at medium range
.22 LR hunting rifle - pests and small game
.22 LR match target rifle - heavy target rifle to compete
.22 magnum and/or Hornet - pests and larger small game in relatively populated farm country
.223 Rem target rifle - predators and centerfire practice
.270 Win - longer range light to large game (companion to .30-06 in case one or the other breaks on a hunt)
7mm-08 - less recoil in a very light mountain rifle
.30-06 - heavy game and standard weight target rifle
.308 heavy barrel target rifle for long range target shooting
.338 Win Mag - longer range heavy game and bears
.375 H&H magnum - bears on up to Africa (high recoil makes the 7mm-08 and .270 better for smaller stuff)
.50 caliber black powder - black powder/shotgun areas
20 gauge rifled slug shotgun - black powder/shotgun areas

Also shotguns:
20 gauge - upland game
12 gauge - ducks
12 gauge double - skeet and trap

That's 13 rifles at a bare minimum, and we haven't even touched a lever gun or backpacking rifle. Sweet sixteen including the smoothbores. Please stop the one gun insanity. :D

If pushed into a corner for hunting rifles:
.22 LR
.22 Magnum
.223 Rem
.270 Win / .30-06 combo
.375 H&H

That's six rifles at barest minimum to cover hunting purposes, losing out on the 2 target rifles, 1 rifled shotgun / 1 black powder and 1 mountain rifle.

....Since I would only have one, selling off the rest of my junk to pay for it leaves the field wide open.

Come to think of it, selling everything and buying a small selection with names like Echols, Miller or Martini on 'em might make more sense than what I'm doing now.

Lately I've been tempted to sell the whole works and buy one stunner.
I'd be pushing it to get one Martini, but wouldn't it be nice.
7x57 on the small Hagn singleshot, oh boy! :)

Then there's the downside.....

I get so damned attached to some of them, it's like they're part of the family.....and wouldn't it be painful to hunt from a boat or canoe with a Martini, my God the moisture and the dings....and what if I dumped the canoe and lost it in the drink....and in a year I'd regret not having all the choices that I now have....and what would I use as a back up on a fly out....and where would the fun be in loading for one rifle....and what would I do for 18 months until it showed up....and.....

For the world, the .375 H&H.
For North America, the .300 Win.
For Saskatchewan, the STW.

There is something to be said for quality over quantity.

well sense this thread is back at the top, i have given it some more thought. i said at the beginning i would take the savage scout in 308. it is still near the top of my list but there is a new rifle that has been a new favorite of mine. its the ruger 77/357. great rifle!! and 38/357 is really easy to find and i can take down anything down with it around were i live. its a toss up between my ruger and my savage.
