Just bought my first AR! (NEA-15 10.5" + accessories) My whats, whys, and experiences

Honestly, at this point I can't even imagine 100 yards. :) I guess at that point I'd just want to get a round somewhere on the paper. All in all this is very exciting. As powerful as shotguns are, there's just something special about shooting a high powered rifle (yes, 5.56 is high powered for me).

After doing some more research tonight, I think I'm going to re-zero at 50 metres instead of the 25 I left off at. This is where I was heading when the power went out. This link was amazingly useful, and really brings home how much better overall sighting is with a 50m zero vs a 25m zero (2" vertical variation over usable range as opposed to 8".) Even though I'll probably mostly end up shooting at 25 or so meters, I'll just keep in mind to aim a bit high at that closer range. I love this stuff!

I just installed my Magpul UBR and am happy as beans! I've had an unnatural lust for the UBR since before I even had an AR15 -- I can't explain it so don't ask -- so when OST had their Magpul overstock sale a couple weeks back I jumped right on it.

I was initially concerned with making my SBR rear-heavy but after spending a lot of time talking to my AR15 hero Cameron over at the Firing Line and doing a ton of research, I decided to try it out. Overall feel is great so far. Yes its a bit heavier, but the added weight pulls the rifle into my body rather than tipping the gun forward. Even with a short 10.5" barrel, it felt front heavy with the OEM stock.

Also, it was immensely satisfying doing the install myself. I did have a washer fall out unexpectedly when removing the old stock, which gave me pause, but I assume it came from the old buffer tube to help seat the spring, so I bagged it. Can't wait to get it back to the range with the new duds!

Nice rifle! Love that Eotech... You may want to upgrade your stock LAR mags.... The upgraded Magpul follower is well worth it! Also, if you're planning on using them for tactical courses or competition, I highly suggest the Magpul L plates or Ranger Tabs... Just a suggestion of course, congrats on the purchase!

Thanks guys. I'm going to be doing TSE's carbine course so will get new plates then. Need to find info on modding the Lars and would be happy to try that out (link?), as they're super gritty stock.

As far as the light goes, it's actually my shotgun light. I just put it on there for show. I was fiddling with weak hand grip position and sling configurations yesterday and if I do ever need to mount a light on it, it'll go on the right side rather than bottom.

Here's a link that you might find useful for determining your zero.

I found when it's actually illustrated as such, then it's easier to make a decision.

As for modding your LAR mags, there's not really much that needs to be done. Now keep in mind, this is what I found with them. When they were feeding into the gun, the lip of the casing was getting caught up on the front edge of the magazine, so it was causing a FTF. All I did was compare it to my PMags, and took a small metal file and filed it down to where the point when the casing was no longer catching on the edge. They certainly feed much better now, however I'll really be testing them tomorrow at the range. I just did the mods earlier this week.

Also, you'll notice that after installing Ranger Plates (or L Plates) and the Enhanced Follower, 10 rounds doesn't seat as nice. You really have 3 options here, either run it as such, downgrade and run 9 rounds instead of 10, or file down the follower just slightly so that the 10th round seats and feeds nicely.

Just another note, I found that the LAR mags aren't easily accessible in my mag pouches, and you could do the whole coupler nonsense, but I found that they're good as a starting mag, when you start your drills, but reload with the 30 rounders... they're the most efficient and quickest way to run your gun, IMO at least.
