I will be purchasing Ruger Redhawk 44Mag with 5.5 in bbl and having it magna- ported by Mag-na-port International in USA.

Since I did not have a chance to compare stock Redhawk and magna- ported one, I can't speak of effectiveness of this modification.

What do you guys think of this process and did any of you do something similar to their handgun, and if you did- are you happy with it... did it offer any tangible benefits?

I am planning of having two trapezoidal or oval ports cut into the each side of the barrel placed at approximately 35 to 45 degree angles, hoping to achieve reduced recoil and muzzle flip.

Your experiences and opinions are welcome!

Cheers,
Dan

Hi Dan,

I personally love ported guns but for me more flash and bang is always a welcome thing :)

I have a Dan Wesson 44 that came with both ported and unported barrels. I did notice a difference in recoil with the ported barrel installed.

The heavier the load the more the porting will help or at least that's the theory.

If you are going to all the trouble of getting the work done stateside, get Magna-Port to rework Redhawk too.

Their action jobs are well thought of and they can do numerous things with the finish too, barrel chopping included. They are a full range shop.

If you don't mind me asking, how are you going to handle the export permits and such?

Doing it yourself or someone is handling it for you?

Take care,

Hello Page, thanks for info on your Dan Wesson.

I am hoping that it will do same for Ruger Redhawk, that I am buying.

Plan is to purchase handgun in USA and have it shipped to Magna- port before I do importing to Canada.

Fairly straight forward, but it will take time and money.

Details are still in the works, and I will let you know as situation develops.

Presently, I am in negotiations with couple of US gun stores, and Canadian importers.

I bet you are going to like that gun. I have a 5.5inch Redhawk without porting, so, if when yours is done you send it to me for comparison testing I'll tell you how much difference it's makes. Don't worry about supplying ammo, I can use my own.

Aren't we Gunnutz ever so helpful and generous? :)

Mine will be stainless steel, yours is blued... much easier on the recoil.

Regrettably, this makes comparison impossible. ;)

Thanks for the kind offer, though.

Ahhhh, gotcha. That's a much better and easier way to go IMHO.

Just getting in a barrel kit for a 1911 was a struggle.

Couldn't imagine buying a gun here, then shipping it to the states for work. Canadian/US Rules and Regs are a major PIA at times.

Make sure to let us know how it turns out :)
