Not for hunt but bench or paper punching

exactly for this set up i have a short action savage with standard bolt face

I see on the web lot of shooter in Us to use 6.5x47L and look to be really accurate at very long distance

Can you tell me if 260 Rem fit on short action rifle?

there are not enough options at the top... you don't even have any true long range calibers in there!?!?!... you have 243 as an option... really?..

i use 300 win mag, nothing special as far as ammo goes federal 180 grain. It takes a bit to get the hang of it, and i can only shoot about 20 rounds in a sitting, but its a tack driver through and through.

Huh? All of the above are plenty capable to shoot accurately out to 1000 yards and more. A magnum is not required to shoot long range. My 6.5mm bullets will retain more velocity and energy than your standard "Federal" 180gr. bullets @ 1000 yards due to its high BC.
Continue to shoot your shoulder bruisers.
 
OP any of the calibers you listed will take you to 1000 m but if the wind is blowing the bigger stuff will take the lead .
It seems to me that the 6.5 x47 was designed to shoot at 600 m and I know the 6br is the one to beat at 600 m but they will both make it to 1000.

For shooting past 600m out to 1000 I would build a big 6.5 ,7mm or big 30 cal if you are comfortable hanging on to a higher recoil gun there are many calibers to choose from.
 
LONG Range 1000Ms

If it's benchrest shooting, 6BR to 243Ack or 260 to 6.5-284, anything within these perimeters are used provided the shoulder angle is 35 to 40 degrees.
This would be pure benchrest, punching paper. The 308 and 223 can not compete with these calibers. F-Class is completely a different game and different calibers.

Yes, a 260rem will work well in your savage short action, 260 is just a necked down 308win. The savage mag is about .125" longer than a remington 700 short action.

I haven't bought a dedicated long distance rifle yet, but I fully intend on it being chambered in 6.5X55. Lots of commercial ammo available, large selection of bullets(more than my original first choice of 270win) and brass, and it has been used for a century, still offering no less than modern developments.

Come on out one day and I will personnally put my 6BR up against your 300WM at 900m for 15 rounds. ;)
 
I personally shoot 6.5's. 6.5x47L and 260 REM. It seems to be the best combo of barrel life, low recoil in my opinion. Lot of guys seem to like 6BR. One of the guys here regularly wins beating much bigger cal's.

I would suggest you shoot the highest BC with the biggest case that your shoulder and wallet will comfortably take.

I don't like that much recoil so I went with Lapua. Also the brass and dies seem expensive until you reload the same cases 15 times. Plus it is somewhat different which I like.
 
I am no pro. But I love to shoot and take it seriously.
So I think I should chime in. I make sure to always air one of my rifles on the weekend, and have fired all the common Scandinavian hunting cartridges, but mostly 308 and 30 06.

I finally purchased a 6.5x55, and I am very happy with it. It has way less recoil than my Howa in 308 and I hit way better when shooting at approx. 400 yards. (I do my target shooting on the land, ice, rocks etc. with out rangefinder. I will get one, promise.)

But as someone that still has plenty to learn I am so happy I got this rifle as I really think it will teach me how to reach my goals regarding long range hunting!

So get something mild, with a nice long pill that flies far and true, and smile every time you pull the trigger!
