My rig, thus far for optics, is a TRG-42 .300 win mag. I have ordered all of the optics components except for the rings.
I've ordered a Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50 FFP Riflescope (30mm tube and a 50mm objective lens), an Evolution Gun Works picatinny base (20MOA) but am at a loss as to which rings I should be looking at.
I've read that,
50mm objectives will almost always use HIGH rings in a given style. In certain instances, such as with extremely heavy barrels or some makes of firearm, EXTRA HIGH rings may be necessary. http://cheaperthandirt.com/blog/?p=2873
Is this true? What material should I be looking to be used in the manufacture of the rings, and are there any other features that I should be looking at when considering scope rings?
Are there any highly recommended manufacturers?
Thanks in advance

Makers of quality rings (TPS, Badger, etc, etc) will have precise listings of their various heights. Best is to mock your components together and take measurements, then order what fits.

Well, I did as you suggested (great idea by the way thank-you for the input) but it's left me somewhat skeptical haha. I did up a cardboard cutout to the dimensions given on the Vortex Optics website here . When I aligned everything it was clear of anything touching it at 10mm and still had roughly 3mm of room underneath the objective. For some reason this doesn't seem right given that the standard height for Badger's rings are 0.823" or 26.2mm. This would suggest that I should opt for the standard height (or lower) and not the high as I previously read...
Could this be due to the EGW 20MOA base? At it's thickest (towards the stock), it's roughly 7.5mm and at its thinnest (towards the muzzle) it's roughly 6mm.

Actually, just taking a look around at other manufacturers heights, it would appear that it varies considerably. The highest rings from Talley only reach to 0.6" or 15.24mm and their standard low rings at 0.3" or 7.62mm while Badger's low is 0.8" and their extra high reach as high as 1.25".

FYI Medium Height USO Tactical Rings look like this.

Exactly - "High", "Low" and "Extra High" are all relative terms. There is no standard between manufacturers, so ya have to find out the measurements from each manufacturer to get what you require.
