every year around august i start walking around to prepare myself for the upcoming season. now im getting a little wee bit older and its safe to say im on the other side of prime . i'm six feet tall and for many years i have been 285 lbs i have been in the bush my whole life and moving around is not an issue, a 6 or 7 mile walk with a pack on is no big deal, yet.

so i decided to quit smoking, i smoked for 25 years. i have been smoke free for 49 days today. guess what, surprise surprise i picked up 7 lbs. well now i have decided to lose some weight because i love to hunt, its what i do. now i have to admit the idea of a diet is scary to me. the thing is i want to keep hunting, the way i can hunt now.

so if anybody has any tips for losing 40 lbs or so i like to hear it, because i need to get in shape for the hunt.

stop eating wheat.

cut that and by thanksgiving you'll have lost the 40 lbs you want.

Really not that hard- rye bread (although I haven't eaten bread in 3 months and don't miss it at all), potato flour if you must, but mostly just increase your meat and veggie intake. The darker green the better.

Take your normal hunting pack, add 15 lbs, and do your walking. jog if you can for a few paces (remember scout's pace- 50 jogging 50-100 walking) to build up endurance.

You'll burn calories fastest if you do cardio after exhausting your muscles, so things like lunges and squats to 'tire out' your muscles, then walking for a few miles with as much jogging as you can.

Personal experience- I'm down almost 35lbs in 12 weeks, counting the muscle I've gained, which means I've burned likely 50lbs of fat.

Cut out as many carbs you can. Sugar and refined flour/wheats are the real enemy.
Protein, fats, and a little veg and the weight will fall off.

vodka/rum and diet pop is fine.

Eat smaller portions more often and drink water before you eat with some almonds. They help suppress your appetite.
Started following the posts and had to add this one. A buddy came from the DR. and when asked what he was told responded "if it tastes good spit it out"

getting ready

I am doing the same have been running 3 km in the morning and biking 13 km after work, I found out that once you consume any alcohol your body stops burning fat and goes in to a conservation mode storing all fats. I you are going to drink don't eat once you start drinking this is the hard one I know. I have lost 30 lbs over the course of 4.5 months of training.

Eat less overall and stop eating white bread and fried/battered food, also stop drinking beer. Get more execise to increase cardio/heart fitness. Having said that I'd rather be fit and a bit overweight than skinny and unfit, especially hunting in November-December. To me heart fitness and stamina is more important than weight, after all you won't be running while hunting.

What he said. Cut out wheat and you be astonished at how fast you lose fat. I dropped 30lbs in a couple months this spring. Lots of veggies and meat, lots of activity. Good luck!

First congrats on being smoke free for 50 days!

Secondly, diets shouldn't be an issue. There are good carbs and then there are bad carbs. White bread, alcohol and white rice are the 3 common bad carbs that people ingest. Cutting 1 or 2 of them for a month is simple and can do wonders! Try it out. keep up your normal activity, and maybe increase the distance, weight load or add some more hills to your walks on a weekly basis.

If you have a spare tire that you want to burn, do not do situps or crunchs. Instead cut down on sugars in your diet. Orange Juice or Apple Juice with all of its vitamin C and natural sugars will act as a stress reducer and continue reinforcing a good diet. as per exercise - keep up your regular activity and add to it when you feel you are ready.

good luck!

there is a diet called the 17 day diet. just started it myself. suppose to lose at least 20 lbs in 17 days. i've been on it four days and have lost 4 lbs already. the diet comes with a meal plan. pretty much no carbs and no sugars. lots of salad which really sucks cause your allowed now dressing other than balsamic vinegar. but I feel great already.

You can replace rice with quinoa. Quinoa is full of fibre and protein. The wife makes shrimp/chicken fried rice(but with quinoa) and low sodium soy sauce. Tastes great. watch your salt intake. You will need it to train, just try to look for choices with less. Cut out pop! That includes low cal diet ones.

You've already had a lot of good advice.

+1 for cutting down on wheat.

Also, drink a lot of water. It will cut down on the temptation to eat. Also as mrai said, diet pop doesn't have calories but there's growing evidence it leads to weight gain anyway.

Eat what you want, in moderation. When you cut things out of your diet, your body will just crave it even more. Take a look at your portion sizes, they are probably bigger than you need. It will take you awhile to adjust to smaller portion sizes, so while you are making the transition drink water when you are getting "hungry". It will probably take you a month to adjust.

Diets are useless. They may work in the short term but don't work long term unless you make larger eating habit changes.

Reduce the amount of salt, beer, sweets, junk food and increase the amount of fruits and veggies. Notice that I said reduce. Enjoy the foods that you enjoy, just one or two beers versus five or six etc.

i disagree, but lets just say there are differen ways of loosing waight, reducing portions is dieting as well, whichever way you chose it takes commitment and drive, you lower portions and you are prone to binge eating, change diet and you will crave what you cut out, from a personall experience i can say once you change your diet, after a while reducing portions comes in easier, just dont cheat yourself, or make a deal with yourself, for every week of good dieting reward the body by having a beer or some other treat(my wife's pancakes are hard to resist)

btw congrats on kicking the habbit, ive been smoke free for 5yrs, hope you succeed

If it seems easy, it's not. Cut down on the carb's , modify your intake of carbs...better carb's. Sure. But retraining your body to burn fat in place of the missing carbs is something you want to check with your doctor about, the Atkins diet was designed for young men in the air force. Are you a young man?
Losing weight the proper way isn't easy, trust me. It's hard work and you have to give up food you enjoy ( guessing here).
But each journey begins with a step.
If you are into no work weight loss, it's probably going to be hard on your body.
Nothing is free.
BTW, good luck.

I cut out all wheat and my gut got a lot smaller and no more feeling bloated. After a month I didn't miss it anymore and lost about 10 lbs.

Try Yoga and don't laugh it is hard and will make you much more flexible. just search you tube and watch the videos, and do it with your wife if you have one.
