Looking for suggestions for an optic on my AR-15. I have an idea of what I want to get but wanted to get some opinions from the community.

Looking for something within the 200 yd range, but most likely be shooting targets within 100 yds most of the time. Looking for something that could acquire targets fast, but not compromise precision.

I wear contacts so my eyesight ain't the greatest, but not terribly bad, if that means anything.

Ideally would like to spend around $600-700, will spend more if I feel a need to. Definitely won't spend more than a $1000 for this particular optic.

Any suggestions is appreciated. Thanks.

For starters, try the search function. This topic gets asked and covered about once a week.

Second, you need to decide what type of shooting you're going to do with your rifle and optic setup. If you want something to play with than anything will work. If you are planning on competing you need to determine what discipline you're interested in and go from there. As for an optic that is both fast and precise, it doesn't exist. You can't have both. There are optics that are fast that offer decent levels of precision. And there are optics that can be very precise with relative speed for target acquisition. There are no optics that will give you both.

For 200 yards and less with most shots at/to 100. Any reddot or similar CCO will do just fine. Even irons are capable and reasonably fast at that range.

Actually that was a good thread. My bad for not searching for it.

I was leaning towards an Aimpoint Pro to start with, but saw someones post regarding the Aimpoint T1/Comp M4. I'll have to do some research on it. Is it worth the extra hundred or so bucks?

Lots of 3 gun competitors use a 1-4x scope. There are several options in a range of prices. The Millet DMS-1 is at the low end at around $260 and it goes way up from there.

Nothing wrong with the PRO, however there are several T1's and H1's in the EE with top of the line mounts going cheap. The upside is that they're much lighter and smaller than their big brothers.

Thanks for the suggestion. The millet got good reviews on OpticsPlanet.com. Seems like a very good site to get specs and reviews on all the scopes out there.

I was leaning towards a RDS for my initial purchase. And if I have difficulties with longer ranges, perhaps supplement it with a 3x magnifier. But perhaps a 1-4x scope may be a good option. My head hurts.

The Millet scopes I saw had horrible glass. Very distorted. I ended up with a Trijicon 1-4x24. TR24G. It's awesome. Not inexpensive, but worth it. Vortex, and Bushnell also have a couple of options that would work in that type of scope.

If it was me going to a dot, I would look at the T1 or H1 like TDC mentioned, great compact reliable and lightweight.

X2 on the Millet 1-4 glass. Just terrible to look through (distorted and yellowy-bad) vs any decent optic. The Chinese company that makes these is always at IWA and SHOT and will sell you your own brand for about 100 units. Steer clear.

The Trijicon 1-4x24 has nice glass, nice optic.

If a red dot will do, any Aimpoint really. Pick your poison.

I need to make an ammo run soon and wanted to purchase an optic at the same time. More I think of it. Want something more than a 1x red dot. Trijicon was on my radar but can't make the purchase quite yet. Think the trijicon would be useful for my other rifles and better for the longrun.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I would agree, I run a trijicon. ;)

Really? I have 2, and they're both clear as day.... now they're not as good as the Vortex 1-4, but for the price, I'm really happy with them... It could be older models maybe? Or maybe just a bad lot?

I just picked up a Trijicon 1-4x and it is very nice. If you want daytime visible reticle illumination in a low power variable, it is probably the best thing going this side of a S&B Short Dot. I bought mine used, so I was able to save a bit over the new price.

For something more within the budget you have given, Leupold, Bushnell, and Vortex all offer low power variables with illuminated reticles.

I recently had the same choice to make and I went with an Aimpoint COMP M4 2 MOA. Very fast both-eyes-open optic with infinite eye relief. It co-witnesses perfectly with fixed irons also. Im not having any issues scoring hits at 200 yards on fig 11 targets and up closer it can be very precise. Obviously not as precise as a magnified optic, but I really like the speed and durability. There is also an option to add a magnifier should I want to (I don't).

Of course I am running a chrome lined barrel and my current setup really isnt geared for precision shooting. If it was I would go with a magnified optic.

Sigh...this just reinforces that I need more funds to feed this habit. Not only do I have to budget for additional gun purchases I'd like to make, I gotta buy all the different optics I want for them. I knew going into this, I wasn't going to just buy the 1 do all, end all optic. WTF did I get myself into, hahaha.

Okay my 2 pennies. If u want to shoot distance +200m I reccomend the leupold mark AR 3-9x40 or if you areunder 200m buschenell has a acog clone for under $300 both great scopes. I run a mark AR on my 20 inch heady barrel. (as reccomended by a 2x queens medalist)
