Anyone have a simple solution for taking apart 9mm ten round mags. Its next to impossible to sqeeze the bottom of the mag to get past the floor plate locks on these. As I understand it the normal capacity mags do not have this issue. I havent taken them apart in the 2 years Ive had them but thought I would today.

Any suggestions or do you all just opt not to get in there and clean them???

Thanks,

Rock Out

They are impossible to take apart (without destroying the floorplate) by desing.

I'd let them soak then blow the gunk out with an air compressor as best as possible.

They are not impossible. Push in the floor plate detent, then "smear" the floor plate against a table edge and they pop right off.

OK this is the "best" way that I have found to take Glock base plates off.

Get a 1/8 or 3/16 pin punch(fits the hole), take the punch and insert in the hole in the bottom, make sure the punch is all the way down(retaining plate), now (this is a prying motion),push the plate towards the front of the mag(using the side of the mag for leverage). You should get it to move about 1/4 of an inch and then it should slide right off.

It's the best method that I've used and the one we were taught.
I've replaced several plates on mine with the new "Vickers" model.

Cheers Darrin

There are two tabs on the magazine body that lock the floor plate in place, you have to squeeze the sides of the mag body sometimes to compress the tabs out of the floor plate before it will come off.

Its squeezing the sides to get those tabs out of the way that is the problem. They simply wont sqeeze in at the bottom of the mags. The floorplates dont fit too tightly or anything its just the f*cking tabs!

Theres a tool you can get to help you squeeze the sides in, alternatively you can use a small C clamp, but dont squeeze it in too far. Once you take them off a few times you wont need the tool

Is it even really that essential to clean the mags?? Dont get me wrong, I like my equipment clean and in order but ive been told by many people that they have never cleaned their mags with zero change in performance!

You don't have to squeeze the sides to remove the floor plate. It is easier if you do but not required.

Ive tried prying them with the detent in and what I would consider "smearing" as TDC put it but its getting me nowhere and looking more and more like its going to destroy the detent hole in the process!

You obviously never dropped your mags on sandy ground and have them stay stuck in the magwell have you?

If you compete outdoors or work with a gun in a dirty, dusty environement...you just gotta perform regular maintenance on them.

My 2 cents.

With use such as that then regular cleaning goes without question. Im speaking in terms of a gun used at the range with mags not having been dropped outdoors! So that being said same question??

ROck out. If your IPSC or IDPA shooting, your mags are going to see the ground a lot, and probably more rounds then 99% of shooters ever put thru them.

If you get sand or dust in a mag the follower will bind up and not feed reliably. If you get them wet, the springs or tube can rust, depending on the mag, and again will fail.

If you just shoot alot with a dirty propellant you would be amazed at the powder residue deposited down the mag body in the course of a few hundred rounds. Again, this will sooner or later hamper feeding, and usually at a match.

TDC has the technique that i've used in the past, or you can replace the stock base pad with after market for easier access. I try to avoid just blowing them out with solvent as it tends to just wash the crud into the bottom of the mag (which can make it even harder to get the base plate off ;) )

Any of these techniques will work OP, good for you for being pre emtive in your maintenance!

Can you explain the method TDC proposed in slightly more detail. I tried using an allen key to push the detent in with the mag upside down and with the detent depressed placed the side of the floorplate on the edge of a table and pulled the mag down to see if it would pop off but it it wouldnt budge! Is that the general idea behind this??

If the mag has never been apart it may take a healthy shove to get it off. push in far enough that the detent is depressed below the basepad, put the edge with the cut out against the top edge of the table and push down. the plate should push up off the tube.

As other posters have mentioned, it helps if you can squeeze the sides of the tube in.

youtube will probably have a vid of the process, take a quick look

Yes, IPSC. Indoors and outdoors. And yes, I do work with a pistol in a dusty, dirty, rainy, snowy or hot and humid environement....40 hrs a week for the last 12 years.

You're exactly right. You have to keep the tab "displaced" with the allen key or similar until the floorplate starts to move. you can also try a thin flat blade screwdriver like one for eye glasses. Insert it between the floorplate and mag body then turn it "up" forcing the body of the screwdriver between the two pieces.

Alright thanks for the help all! Got one off using the small screwdriver method as TDC just stated. Had to pry one side of the baseplate up and over the side wall/lip of the mag body. Its a good method. Left small tool marks on the baseplate but mags are meant to be beaten so its all good. I was surprised how clean it was inside. Shot 2000 rounds with the 3 mags so for the sake of argument lets say this mag has 666.6666666 rounds through it lol. Most of which were MFS btw!

mine wouldn't come off without squeezing the sides. I used both vicegrip c-clamps, and just a pair of pliers. Like was mentioned, after a few times mine now come off with just the pryin motion.
