Why a laser and a red dot?

Planning a build so I've been looking at other guys toys. Every now and then I see a rifle with a laser as well as a red dot scope and I'm just wondering why? (not judging anyones build, please don't take it that way). Is the laser for looks as much as anything, or for quick target aquisition instead of using the scope for closer targets? I've never used a laser on a rifle, so it's definately possible I don't understand it's benefits.

Scope is for long distance shooting, redot for closer ranges or speed, the laser is fun to shoot from the hip, or fast at close distances...

Laser is mostly useful for quick target acquisition and allows for "hip shooting" at close range. Red is useless in daylight. They are fun but not much practical use & adds weight. Green is better in daylight. I have a green one and it's primarily a novelty gimmik.

100% - new shooters who want to have "fun" especially appreciate them........then it's time to teach "proper technique"....

Most of it is for the kool-fun factor .
I have a green laser and quite frankly , I'll use it as often as I can.
Green is better.
Being able to shoot clays , popcans from the hip at 50yd ( yes...50yd ) is rather self-gratifying.
I've just bought a second Mossy tact and I'll be adding a green laser to that one too.

If we ignore the tacti-cool factor for a second, the real reason lies in intimidation. My friend was doing force on force training with the CF. Whenever he saw a laser beam, he was fearful of sticking his head out knowing that there was a simunition bullet waiting for him at the other end of the beam.

Well, according to my wife the laser on her rifle is to "look cool". The reality of the laser being there is so I can help her with her shooting. Kinda helps when you know where she's aiming when she strokes the trigger.
