The question is what type of shooting are you going to be doing? Mid-range shooting (100-300m), or CQB? If all you do is mid-range then you won't use the 1x "red dot" type function of the Specter, and you should go ACOG. If you do 50/50 mid-range and CQB, you should go Specter. If all you do is CQB, don't buy either, get an Aimpoint (the Specter isn't a very good red dot, it has a very specific eye relief, is not parallax free, and is not a "true" 1x).

I'll definitely doing a bit of both that's for sure. I guess I'm just looking for the best excuse to buy the more expensive optic!

$1200 to $2100.... I really do like the Specter, but I understand what you are saying about the eye relief and the red dot for cqb.

I run a 1.5 Micro ACOG on my AR or did, now it has a RMR, and the ACOG moved to the SOCOM 16. I figured since most the of the "range" work where these guns are used is all under 100m. Weight was a big factor for me, I like lighter. If your able to shoot 500-600m then I can see the advantage of the 4X optic. An Aimpoint T-1 had always been in my inventory as well. Just my $.02 that's all. Remember "buy once, cry once" LOL

MILDOT!! lol thanks for chiming in man, I bought that Aimpoint from you, was great, but I just can't make a decision.

I want them all. "buy once, cry once" lol that is so true! I know what to do now... and boy will I cry tonight...

Hey no problem, if your rifle is "restricted" then IMO a 500-600m optic doesn't make sense. I had a 4X ACOG and sold it. My range is >200m. If your ACR is wearing a non-restricted barrel or that's an option in the future then I see the usefulness of the 4X optic. For >100m and 3 gun matches, I like more "field of view" and lighter. Lots of folks use Aimpoint T-1's out to 100m. The mini ACOG has the advantage of no batteries and a wider field of view.

The smalled 1.5X and the 4X all have a slightly wider field of view, all other AGOG's have less field of view.

Seems to me like the OP should just buy both.....:p

The spectre is grossly over priced, you get 1x OR 4x nothing in between. Its built like a tank but weighs almost the same, eye relief is piss poor and the adjustments are coarse. The ACOG is a fixed 3x or 4x(depending on model) is dual illuminated and built like a tank. The 1/2" adjustments on the Elcan are great for shooting people which is what the optic was designed for. Its not so hot for fine tuning the optic for precise shots often required during a competition. The ACOG with fixed power can be difficult to use at short range. I would go with a low power magnified optic, like 1-4 or 1-6. The price of such an optic and mount will likely be similar or less than the ACOG. You will give up some durability and likely add some weight but you can't have your cake and eat it too.

I had the same problem, this is the route I took.

I find it compact, light, and it works well for all applications I use my AR for. 4X dual illumination with the ACOG along with a true 1:1 red dot.

By the way, there was a 1 - 4 Spectre DR on the EE not long ago for a very fair price, I was very tempted, but ended up buying another Glock, so had to take a pass. Not enough 'Toy' funds!! I seem to recall the seller was gravedigger.

Cheers

lol well I just might have to. I made the leap and decided to go with the Elcan Specter DR 1x-4x scope. TDC, thank you so much for your opinion (all of you for that matter!), I did think about it and I think this scope will work out for me. Although, the other scope you mentioned was tempting because of the price.

I like the fact that Elcans are made in Canada, you don't get to buy something made in Canada everyday :), so that made it easier to spend the money on it.

I'm planning on buying another rifle, so the ACOG will probably be next :)

Yes, stupid me was dragging my feet thinking of what I should buy and I missed the deal - they don't come often! he was selling it for $1400 shipped, BNIB. dope! but I ended up buying the FDE model anyway, so i'm happy... at an additional $200 - wow. What people will pay for colour.

Congrats, I hear that they have improved since my Army days! :) $200 for FDE, money well spent!
Wait till you start dropping $3000 on scopes!! X 2. Good Luck.

oh my lord who in the world would spend $3000 on a scope!! ;) I love firearms and all the accessories, but man does it ever get expensive. Time to join the SMA group (small arms anonymous) :).

Now it's time to sell something from my collection (so I don't feel so guilty).... KSG anyone? ;)
