Hey Boys and Girls.
I’d like to say first off, thanks for taking the time to read through this thread as it means a lot to me to help a good friend of mine.
I’ll start off the story by giving you all a brief rundown of the circumstances that have led me to this post.
I have a friend who lives in the US of A and has had a good career in the military as an ARMY Ranger and Airborne Engineer. For those of you who know what army engineer’s do he’s that guy. He spent a good part of his ARMY life behind enemy lines doing the things that movies are made from.
After the ARMY he found himself protecting the public by keeping the criminal element locked up and safe in there 6x9 government issued dorm rooms.
So let’s get to why I’m wrighting to you for help.
It was during his time in the military when he developed diabetes and led to his early retirement from service, with partial pension. During the course of the next decade in public service his health deteriorated to the point where he has completely lost the vision in one eye and has less than 50% in the other. This again has forced him out of the work force and has left him reeling. Subsequently as a result of being forced out of work he has lost all rights to his medical insurances as they were work issued and have run out. Those of you who have had any experience with the US medical system will know that you have to pay for your medical insurance and, well basically you get what you pay for and for the majority of people across the border that’s not much. Because of this he has had to make some massive sacrifices to insure his health and keep a half way descent quality of life. These include loss of transportation and personal effects as well as the loss of his home.
I’m not intending this to be a Thread about who has the best med plan because we all know what the answer to that quandary is.
Because of the rapid degenerative effects of his medical issues he has been feeling very down, as some of you can imagine.
What I am asking is for a little help. But not in the usual ways. This friend of mine has been one of those guys who always has a smile on his face and can make you laugh during the most stressful times. Shooting sports have been a big part of his life style for many years and now that’s all gone too.
So I’d like to return the favor.
My plan is to make him a walking cane from spent cases as I know this would put a smile on his face and crate conversation. The problem I’m faced with is I have no idea what the vision impaired canes dimensions are based on, and I’m trying to figure out what calibers to use as well as a bunch of other smaller variables to deal with.
What I’m looking for are a few ideas and a few cases to start with.
Some of the ideas I had were to machine out the primer pocket so the case neck will fit snugly into the opening then braze or solder them together making up one section of the cane.
Another was to place the cases inside a clear plastic tube of some sort thus building them in sections again.
If anyone has a few old cases that maybe have been shot past their prime and or have some they just don’t use anymore and wouldn’t mind sending them that would be fantastic, the bigger the better. I have the more common stuff like .303, .308, .223, 9mm, and 30-06, but I’m looking for some oddball stuff that I don’t have like .50, .416, 45-70 to name a few.
Any ideas and or foreseeable issues that you might have let me know
I thank you in advance for taking the time to read this and sharing your thoughts and ideas.

Interesting idea. I have a spare piece of .50 brass and a 20mm too. The .50 slides snugly into the 20mm, so that may help with assembling. PM me your mailing address.

Think the brass is a great idea that will put a smile on his face for sure. To bad you cannot find one of these or make one. That will put the smile there for ever. I have only ever seen one however they say gunsmith made from a old bolt action shotgun. Pretty cool but probally illegal also in canada
Good luck with the project

Thanks for the reply and the help. Im not entirely sure what or how im gonna get this done but have a few good ideas. As for that fine example of a cane id love to build one but im sure it would get me in trouble. HAHAHAHAH

I'm not sure how sturdy it would be to have the cane made of spent brass.

How would you feel about taking an existing (slim profile) cane and hollowing out brass to slip them over?

or you could put multiple cases around the cane... kinda like a revolver drum or something.

This is also quite nice and elegant

You could have the tip of the cane as the end of the brass with bullet and everything.

A friend made me a wood cane out of a piece of pine we found in the bush while four wheeling. He drilled and hammered a fired 9mm case into the side of it near the handle which is at nearly 90 degrees to the shaft and is all one piece. It has a high gloss finish (vera thane?) over the natural wood and has a nice sanded rustic appearance. Lee Valley used to sell cane parts which might be of some help. As for length make it to long and then adjust after it is finished and your friend has a chance to try it.

I have had a few ideas how to maybe try and get the cane to the point where it would be light enough and collapsible and an insert of some kind was tops on the list. It was suggested that I try a section of old carbon graphite fishing rod as the insert and then maybe it would have enough rigidity to stand up to the vigour’s of the visually impaired. Or at least to my buddy who can be a bit of a clumsy dude.
Thanks for the input. Keep it coming

I popped that brass in the mail today, but yeah, you'll have an issue with weight. Anyway, let us know how it goes and post some pics when you can. Good on ya for doing this.

Thanks Steve.
I plan on documenting the process and then the finished product for you to see. Just have patience as I have a day job and I run my own business as well so time is my biggest issue. Lucky for me I have a few buddys here who own machine and fab shops who volunteered to help with the project. Ok well maybe volunteer is not really true as they love beer and I said I'd supply it. Hmmmm that might have been an expensive overwrite on my part. Lol.
Thanks again for the help guys. You have no idea how much this means to me and if I know the recipient he will be really touched to know that a whole community helped out with this.

I should mention. I stopped by the local industrial paint and plastic supplier and they have a light weight clear resin that I was thinking of using to surround the cases with. The only problem that there might be was he wasn't sure whether the resin would react with the brass and change colour. So I though I would do a little experiment this weekend and see. If it works I should have some sections done soon as I get the brass sorted. Also I talked to a guy at the local tacle shop and they may have a few blanks I can play with.

Thanks stevebc
Got the brass yesterday in the mail and opened it last night. Gotta say never having a .50 in my hand I sure was impressed with its size and weight. Holy cow that thing is huge. I have to re evaluate the size now that I've seen it first hand. I'm not sure I can use too many of them or the cane will weigh more than me. Lol.
Thanks for helping out.
