Short barrel SKS

I appreciate the input but why should I worry? People can't have a conversation?

We can, but I really don't see the point in worrying about cycling issues on a project that we can't legally undertake. I suppose you could get a custom barrel made (Dlask maybe), in such a length. The length you are discussing would be about the same bbl length as the paratrooper. You could research if those models had any gas system mods, but I would be surprised if they did, they look pretty standard. At most maybe go up a size or two in the gas port.

Every SKS I've seen or handled has plenty of gas to beat the snot out of brass. Also I've seen quite a few shorty builds from the US, so it can't be that difficult, it seems quite common.

T dot is pretty high, on the BC tactical scout mount it might be ok, but on mine with a tapco stock I had to use a cheek riser. I wouldn't count on the irons on the top for much. At best they have a sight radius of like 4 inches, but they would be better than nothing.

Additionally, I don't know the reality or dynamics, but could you modify an ak barrel to fit (if you can find one). It would be same era and similar gas design. If that's totally impossible and a stupid idea, please refrain from extended belittling haha

So your saying as far as the legal issues are concerned there is no in between measurement? Over 18" is non restricted and under 18" is prohib?

I've thought cutting mine down as well a few inches ahead of the gas port but have heard some negative results, anyone else heard of this, as far as the folks that think restricted is a negative for a few hundred bucks you can have one of each

Cannot modify a semi-auto barrel from > 18.5" to < 18.5". Period, full stop.

That would be manufacturing a prohibited device (the barrel)

You could re-barrel it with a new manufacture custom barrel to < 18.5", and then get the classification of that firearm changed to restricted. That is the only option to go sub-18.5"

That sucks, gotta love Canada, not sure if you could ever get an aftermarket barrel, never heard of such a thing for an sks

It would be a one off job basically. Dlask is a gunsmith/manufacturer. They have done shorty CZ's before they became available. I would imagine the bbl would be similar (screwed in vs pressed in, but similar gas block setup)

*sarcasm on* Yup,and while you risk jail time, you might as well going to full bore fun and convert it to full auto (simple...!) and get a 50 round drum and take the pin out,so at least you didn't get jailed for just a couple inches missing on barrel lenght! *sarcasm off*

Seriously, the SKS offers a lot more posibilities than what is legal here and in US...the trick is,stay within the limits and enjoy a better shooting SKS or (and I don't say that with my outside voice) Go,find out what can be done with a >200$ gun and cut it to bits with a grinder or a blowtorch afterwards-be proud of your self and your discoveries, nobody can steal or judge your knowledge.

And yes, conversation is still allowed-but I'd be careful about who to talkt to,there are not only " gun nuts " reading these forums.

best mount, my experience, choate side mount, drill and tap, I shortened mine, still leaves irons, use burris rings with rail to mount fast fire, gives you three options, need short scope to use stripper clips, I use fixed 2.5 ultralight, A nightforce compact 1-4 would work, I think the sks is worth it:cool:,, chop, cut rebuild, or drop $2500 on an xcr

Thanks again everybody! Lots of great info here. I'll just get a scope/sight that either, dosent need a battery, or one that still has a black dot if the battery fails. I still have to do a bit more looking around to find the right one. I don't really want to spend more than 200-250$ on a sight. I'm definitely getting the choate rear mount. Anybody know if it has to go with the measurements they give you? Can I not mount it lower if I want to? Seeing as how I'm loosing my irons I want it as low as possible.

All this to save 2 inches, and then you are concerned over not having irons?

Now you will have a gun with only a rear sight?

Then you want to mount a a scope on a choate mount, instead of utilizing the rear sight with a BC tacical?

Cutting the barrel to make a gun more compact, then adding a higher mount that hangs off the gun, and a scope that will make it even bulkier than it was in the first place?

f:P:

Yeah! So! But it's so much fun. Look how much fun we're having! I'm going to have the tacticoolest sks ever.
