I am trying to find an M44. I think I have a line on one. :)My priority is to take it out and shoot it every weekend. So all I really want a nice shooter. Can anyone give me any hints on what to look for? Barrel?....etc...this is going to be my first firearm. Thanks Gunnutz.

Bore condition is EVERYTHING, the shinier and more mirror like it is the better it will shoot.

My M44's barrel looks BRAND NEW inside it, no lie.

You may want to look for a polish M44, they are simply the nicesr M44 you will find and many are in unissued condition and most of the used ones have excellent bore.

Ya this ^ they seem to be going up in price lately though. You could get them for about $200 the last few I have seen in the EE have been between $300 and $400 nice looking guns with nice build and finish quality. I have one that appeared unfired when I bought it and it's only seen my non corrosive reloads.

I have a line on a local Russian M44. I hope it turns out. I'll be looking at it next week. I have no experience with evaluating surplus. Bore condition was mentioned. I wonder if there's anything else you guys can think of?

I have an East German M44, and oddly one of the best shooters i own in x54R. I always slug the bore to know what i should expect at the range.

I had a Polish M44 a while ago, it would'nt shoot worth a damn. The left sight seemed to be canted to the left, everybody who looked down the sights remarked about it. Look for bore condition, the lands and the grooves, the shinier the better really. Try to get an all numbers matching rifle if possible, and if you can avoid buying online, get one locally so you can shoot it and make sure it ain't a p.o.s. someone is trying to shake. Other than that, good luck and I hope your search goes well. Happy shooting. By the way, when you find something, scrap her down and give her a good cleaning, just to be on the safe side. Cheers.

I was worried about my wife shooting it. That's good to know. I figured we'd have to get her something with less recoil like an SKS :)
