Savage Axis in 223?

There has been a great deal of discussion on these guns.

My conclusions:

- look, feel, and overall quality of fit and finish: Econo model and cheap
- accuracy: everyone claims an inch or less but take that with a grain of salt
- mechanics: clunky and rough
- Trigger: replace with a quality Rifle Basix or timney the factory one is junk and trimming coils off the spring makes me nervous
- Value: IMHO it should sell for less than $300 $250-$275 is a justifiable price

I'd agree with this mostly. I've seen 2 Axis rifles at work on a 100m range. One was a stranger's .270 he was sighting-in with a cheap scope, the other my nephew's .223. The .270 shot a 1" group right out of the gate (ammo unkown), the .223 shot under that using Hornady 55gr. Varmint, stock trigger, rickety Harris bipod knock-off. Take from that what you will, or call it "a grain of salt". :) I shoot a Savage Precision 10 Carbine and while some people on this forum think all Savage rifles look/feel cheap, my rifle oozes quality compared to the Axis...but only shoots a little better, and not enough (in my opinion) to matter in the ranges you hunt with a .223. The one thing that jumped-out at me about them was the cheesy plastic magazine release. Have to wonder how that will hold-up in sub-zero temps. My nephew's gun is a treat to carry long distances compared to my gun BTW.

Hunting in -30 last year mine held up fine even after getting banged around up and down the treestand.

why in the world do they put poor triggers on new rifles? The cost to put a quality trigger on a production rifles can't run the cost up that much, and it would address one of the main complaints of new rifles.

So that some people will buy their more expensive models that they do put better triggers on.

axis shoots but suck in everything else.

choosing a gun is like choosing a wife . sure one will get the job done but you can't stand to look at her. pick the one you enjoy to hold not forced too.

In that case the Axis is like the ugly girlfiend you have on the side. She really puts out but you don't have to live with her:p A good second rifle if you want to try a different calibre or something to take to the range and blast some cheap ammo through.

Sorry I couldn't help myself. Please no one tell my wife!
