hey y'all,

ive got a 28" benelli nova and am looking to get into duck hunting... just wondering which choke i should put in the gun... this might be a very newbie question but hey... i'm a newbie
cheers!

No you should shoot it at paper at 30-40 yards to test your patterns. You want 75% or better inside a 30" circle. If you're over decoys at 20-30 yards open your choke up.

this is the choke I use for duck.. LoL

Mod if your use to shooting lead and full IMO i like mod

Lead shot can not be used on migratory birds.

Steel shot seems to get the best patterns and distance with either Skeet I, Improved Cylinder or Skeet II chokes. Usually any tighter chokes tend to distort steel shot patterns.

Just make sure you check your chokes before putting them in. In my M2 I can only use up to MOD if I'm going to be shooting steel. Seems to perform better with IC, though.

In my experience, Ive used full choke for many years for everything from Ducks, partridge, squirrel, coyote, deer..... until last year. Friend bought me a Modified choke, used it and absolutly love it. Never again will i go full choke for waterfowl or grouse.

Also my buddy used a Light Modified last year, and he had the very best of luck with that too. We were both using the same ammo, Blind Side #2 and Hevi-Metal BB for geese.

I use #4 for ducks. If theirs a good chance geese will come by I'll carry some #2 as well.

I used to do the same... Sometimes you had time to switch over to the other rounds, sometimes not...

So, I started shooting 3.5 inch shells loaded with 1&3/8 oz of #2's going 1550fps.

Now I don't have to concern myself with what's in the gun, it works for ducks & geese, dropping them cleanly.

Cheers
Jay
P.S. And, I used to use 3 inch shells loaded with #4's for duck, it was great back east where we saw very little geese. Now that I am in Onterrible, there are many more geese & this prompted my switch...

Up until this year I used nothing but IC in all of my various huntng shotguns. My first hunt this year I tried out a waterfowl Mod choke with 3inch Fasteel number 3 for ducks and number 1 for geese. A great move for me as I used to cripple a few each shoot, now they are all dead on the ground. I.m staying with the mod choke and I may try it in my upland guns as well. FS
