Last year I bought a Nosler M48 Thropy grade Rifle in 300WSM I also got some Talley rings on it. For those who are not aware the rings and bases are one piece. I through the only scope i had on it a Bushnell elite 3200 3-9x40. I shot the rifle with some Federal premium vital-shok 180gr with a Nosler accubond bullet.
When I got the rifle it had a tag on it stating the gun can shoot a 1/4" group with Nosler costume ammo. When I shot it it did in deed shoot a honest to god 1/4" group. I cleaned the gun and put her away. Last week I went to confirm my zero because hunting season is cumming up. I shot the gun and my groups opened up to 2.5" and it was not shooting where I was aiming. So I adjusted it but it would move further then what I adjusted.
One example is the gun was shooting 2.75" left and the horizontal was good. I adjusted my scope 2.75" to the right and took another shot and it was 2" right. So the shot moved 4.75" to the right. This led to a very frustrating day and I went home to check if the action screws where tight, they where. I check the scope rings and the where tight as where the screws fastening the rings to the action.

I determent that it must be the scope so I bought another scope to get the gun ready for hunting. The scope in it now is a Zies Conquest 3-9x40. I went to the range today and I cant get this rifle to zero. I was shooting the rifle off both a sand bag and a led sled. The gun was shooting 1" low so I adjusted it up 1" but the bullet impact only moved up .5" adjusted it again and it will shoot high and I end up chasing groups with no real result. The groups also did not close up where they should be as it is still shooting 1.5-2".

This is incredibly frustrating and depressing at the same time because I have $2500 tied up in this gun and it is not preforming like it should.

Can any one help me and point me in the right direction to solve the problem??

Sorry for the long post... I also posted hear because I think this is where I can get the best advise

Thanks

I don't know except to say that most of these problems are mount issues. I had a similar problem caused by a hard to see crack at the bottom of my rear scope ring/base. I didn't notice it until it became separated. Hope this helps.:(

It sounds like you've ruled out the usual culprits. It could be any number of things, but, most likely, it is a combination of things. I would not expect 1/4 MOA performance from Federal hunting ammo, or any factory ammo for that matter. It is possible that it will spit out the odd 1/4 MOA group, but it may only do it at a certain temperature.

You may need more magnification. I have better than 20/20 vision but I'm quite sure I could not shoot two 1/4" 100yd groups in a row with the scopes you mentioned, even if they were mounted on a laser.

Just because the tag on it said it can doesn't mean it will, but I would expect any factory rifle to hold 1 MOA or better.

Maybe try the ammo Nosler recommends ht tp://www.nosler.com/Ammunition.aspx or start tuning your own load. Just my 2cents.

Well I finally got my gun to shoot the way it did when I last shot it before giving me a huge headache. I removed the scope and the rifle from the stock. Sanded the barrel channel some more to give the barrel more clearance and remounted the rings and scope. Went shooting today and got it to zero and groupe very well (well within 1/2").

I don't know exactly what fixed the problem maybe it was a combination of sanding the stock and re-mounting the scope and rings.......might even have been the change in temperature who knows??
