I just lucked out with a bunch of shotgun reloading supplies, it's pretty antiquated, but in generally good shape.

I got tons of great hulls and wads. The hulls need cleaning and sorting and the wads are fresh in bags and boxes.

Here is the rub;

I got a bag full of old carboard hulls and I cannot be sure of their worth or condition.

I also got a bunch old powder. Some is in unmarked bottles (tape has fallen off) the guy i got it from said I could judge the type by eyballing it, but my books say no bloody way. so I HAVE to ditch that stuff.

I also have some in containers. And it's all ~15 years old

IMR Hi-SHor 700X
Winchester AA Ball powder 473AA
Hercules Blue Dot
Hercules 2400

Of the 1-2000 hulls some will be not serviceable, and I think I should ditch the cardboard, is the trash okay for this? I'm the save for later type so I've never "thrown out" any kind of brass before.

Is the powder safe?

Of the stuff in bottles I am thinking I pour it down the drain with lots of cold water, what do you think? Sounds like common sense to me

The guy who taught my CFSC course said old powder could be used as tossed in the garden after it had been soaked in water for a few days.

Makes sense, as potassium nitrate is a key ingredient in fertilizers.

The powder in its original, marked container, should be 100% useable.
Fifteen years to me is new powder.
your oldest is likely the Hercules 2400, but it should also be good to use.
I am using Hercules 2400 from away back. Made long before they turned 2400 over to Alliant, and it is perfect.
 
for gun powder disposal

boring = through it in the garden.
fun = put it on a plank of wood, or floor (outside, obviously) and make a trail and toss a match!

hulls, i would just toss in the recycling.
 
I agree older powder is fine but if your containers were opened I'd toss them simply due to the previous owner's comment about eyeballing to identify the type of powder.
