500 gr cast for marlin 45-70 loads?

I've loaded my Marlin 95 GG with 500 grain bullets and Goex but to get any kind of reasonable accuracy I found the bullets had to be seated out too far to allow feeding (those bullets I was using had to be seated so deep I could only get about 50 grains in). Worked OK single feed, but I didn't play around with it enough to really see how accurate it could be. The rifling may not be designed for that length of bullet; not to say you can't tailor your load though.

Good luck, it's worth trying anyway - I've often thought about going back into that load.

(I'll be interested to see how that mould you have works out for you)
 
I dont' have a Marlin but Ive used 19gr. of 4759 and 40gr. of 3031

The first load is a black powder type low pressure, the 3031 load kicks harder but is not high pressure either.
 
I use a 525 GC WFN (water dropped WW brinell 18) over 39-42gr of Reloader 7, Fed210 primer..... This is a stout load !!!! and as such, should be approached with great caution... Recoil is abusive and close to Retina detachment/ concussion arena, in a Marlin 18.5" but is controllable .... Velocity 1400-1500+ .... sub 2" 3-shot groups and feeds dead reliable. Pick the path with the greatest amount of bone and be aware of pass through. Can be a real life-saver.

In all reality one does not need these speeds with a 500grain to achieve end-for-end, bone crushing penetration, in any critter that walks. Tsavo
 
My 500gr cast are plain base with no gas checks. Wheel weights water dropped.

For fun plinking loads I put in 16 grains of Bluedot shotgun powder. Haven't chronied it but it's a nice, low recoil, plinking round. I've heard of some people talking about loads like this as "cream-puff" loads.

For heavy loads I use 55 grains of H4198 to good effect. No chrony data (yet...)
I have also tried 36 grains of H4895 and got a 5 shot average of 1312 fps.

The H4198 was much cleaner than the H4895 loads. Both where able to shoot around 4" at 50 yards off hand on iron sights.

My cast bullets are the same as yours, i'll have to try the H4198 load ,the chrony data would be intresting.
