As the thread title states, I am wondering about peoples experience with the H&R single shots. Tell me the good, the bad and indifferent!

How is accuracy? Easy to scope? they should be reliable, not much to go wrong with a single shot...

I was considering one as an inexpensive plinker to play around with in 223. I have wanted a 223 for a few years now but dont have a really pressing need for one, other then to take advantage of the cheapish plinking ammo, and maybe a bit of coyote hunting...

So would the H R single shot be a decent pick for a cheap plinker?

I have a buffalo classic and a regular 45-70 have also owned them in 30-06 and 30-30 always shot great and never gave any problems, easy to scope with a weaver one piece base.

Personally love them. :D
45/70
30/30
.243
And I just got a vintage 12 gauge topper. :D

As I have mentioned before... Don't dry fire these rifles.
It damages them... from what I have seen and read its usually the firing pin.

Greybeards message board has tons more info on them.

Yes, they are some good. Not perfect, and some people report unsatisfactory experiences, but overall they are pretty good value for the price.

I have a Superlight in .223Remington and was very fortunate in finding an additional barrel in .308Winchester. I keep it simple with a Weaver K6 on the .223 and a K4 on the .308, and am very happy with mine.

The trigger is no more difficult to work on than most rifles.

I've got an NEF Handi Rifle in .22 Hornet that's alright, but with the price of the Savage Edge or Stevens 200, you could get a .223 a bolt action (and in the latter case a very good one) for probably about $50 more. I've got a 299 in .223 and am happy with it, even with the cheap Tasco that I'll undoubtedly replace some day.

I have one in 357 mag and love it. under 2" groups at 100.
great bush/truck gun and inexpensive. I would take one over a axis anytime (Yes I have shot a axis).

I just checked the LeBaron catalogue and they list an H&R in .223 with bull barrel and 3x9x32 scope mounted and bore-sighted, plus the hammer extension.

That's priced at $297. Should satisfy the OP's plinking and coyote hunting needs.

This is what I was going to say. The Stevens is only a bit more and is much more rifle with WAY more available upgrades like scope mounts, triggers, bolt knobs and easy barrel swaps. If Canada had it easier to get new barrels mounted like our US neighbours, then the Handi Rifle would be a much better buy then it currently is.

I've been wanting one in 35whelen but after reading so much conflicting reports I've decided to wait for xmas bonus and rebarrel a stevens. Seems the 4570s and small calibers are good. Mid range cals not so good from what I gather

I dont have any of the rifles, but if they are anything like the single shotguns, they're indestructible. Perfect for laying behind the seat in your truck and keeping it there.
