Hello interweb folks. Was at the range this am testing some loads. Here are the results. Anyone that says an axis cant shoot is trying to make themselves feel better for spending more then $329 on a rifle and scope.
The wind was blowing from 30-45km/h all day. All shots from a harris 6-9 bipod and read bag. The rifle is an axis xp with the scope and rings that came with the package. Timney trigger was installed though. Anyway on to the pictures.

Berger 60gr fb varmint 27gr varget 2.392 col. 4 shot groups

Sucks that I pulled a shot on each group. Left group: 1.039" with pulled shot. .191" without pulled shot
Right group: .539" with pulled shot. .163" without pulled shot

While I was there I wanted to try my pet load vmax at 200 yards. It groups an inch or just under at 100 yards so I was pretty happy with these 200 yard groups.

53gr vmax 25.7gr varget. Col 2.244". 5 shot groups

Nice!

Looking at picking up a 270 here soon and throwing in a Basix trigger for it. Did you put in your Timney? How hard was it?

cheers

Yes I put the triggers in both my axis'. Took 20 min to instal and set up so they are light and safe. Also I got mine from western gun parts in alberta.

Wow nice shooting. I love my .223 axis and will be starting to reload for it shortly, thanks for sharing your load data.

Make sure you work up to the load listed loads. The berger loads are way above their max. h4895 has a very similar burn rate and they list data for that. min being 22.0 and max 24.7. Mine are also seated .020 off the lands in MY rifle.

its still an axis..

Yup, and it's still a gun. Read your own signature and stop being so condescending. Not everyone can afford top not gear (me included) and it's nice to be able to find something that performs well on a budget.

I suspect that you're just irritated because your gun, which likely cost at least twice as much, doesn't perform half as well.

remember you get what you pay for.

329 gun plus 100 trigger. = 430 roughly.. i got a weather warrior savage for 450 with accutrigger detach mag that doesn't feel like it was made from melted down water bottles.

it may shoot but if thats all that matters then so be it..

Most of the time, yes, but not always. I think this is one one of the rare times that you get just a little more than what you expect. (I can also think of several examples where I got a lot less than what I was expecting)

Except that the $430 included a scope. (yes, a fairly low end scope, but it seems to be working just fine)

it may shoot but if thats all that matters then so be it..

Hey there "hometownhero"..... Very good thread! I have 3 Axis XP's.. .223, 25-06, .308. All 3 shoot very well regardless of what was paid for them. You were so right in stating "Anyone that says an axis cant shoot is trying to make themselves feel better for spending more then $329 on a rifle and scope." I love my Axis XP's...

The expense of $100 for a timney trigger is not the way to go. 45 minutes of work you can do yourself will get you the trigger results of about 3 to 3.5 pounds of smooth crisp pull. It's very easy and there's videos online to show you what to do. I did all 3 of mine and some friends XP's too and we are pleased as all get out with the results! :)

My nephew has gotten comparable (sometimes better) groups out of his Axis .223 using Hornady 55gr. Varmint (factory) loads) @ 100 yards off a rickety 9-13" Harris knock-off bipod and no rear bag! I've seen it with my own eyes folks, no reason for me to boast. There I am with my Savage Precision 10, front rest/rear bag, better scope, sitting beside him...doing all I can to keep pace with factory loads. Factor in the "carry" experience of that rifle compared to mine...gets me wondering sometimes. :)

Only thing I can take credit for is suggesting that he GET that exact rifle, then drove him right to the Savage dealer to pick it up. He trusted my advice, and boy did it pay off..better than I'd ever hoped it would. Took that kid groundhog hunting 3 times this summer...any hay pig within 150 yards bought the farm on the first shot. His uncle "had to take" the longer shots...of which there weren't too many.

Is every Axis as good as his? No idea....but the only other one I've ever seen shooting was a brand new .270 at a range one day. It was the owner's first time out with the Savage combo. (incl. cheap scope) He put 3 shots in 1.25" at 100 yards using factory ammo too, and was gobsmacked! POI was 3" right, and 1" low...so the factory bore sighting was pretty good too.

This exactly!

I picked up my Axis stainless .223 from a fellow that couldn't get the groups much under an inch. After shooting it myself I took it apart and did a home trigger job on it. It shoots great now with just time invested.
I mounted an old Tasco scope on it and boresighted it.
Threw an old box up on the brush pile 100yds away and rested against my pickup door.
I shot 1 round and then used it for an aim point.
The two I shot at the first hole are beside the dime...
Used cheapo Rem ball ammo...

Looking for one in .243 if any haters have one to sell :D

I have one in 223, changed the barrel and did a new stock for it. I am getting another in 30-06 that will be my deer gun. I'm thinking walnut this time for the new stock.

I do know that usually the theory holds true you get what you pay for
But that doesnt mean you cant find something economical that performs
is there better for a lot of bucks of course.
But personally i have alot of things requiring my dollars so if i can find a firearm that is well priced and performs i have no problem enjoying the shooting and the savings all day long.
Im looking for one of these after trying one a few weeks ago in stainless 308
Enjoy shooting thats the point not whos costs more even though there is always a certain type that only looks at the value by a pricetag to brag over
i woud rather enjoy the day at the range and still have money in my pocket
cheers and safe shootin
