Requirements to change Tavor caliber?

A question to the Tavor owners on CGN.
I am curious as to the difficulty in swapping in a new caliber for the Tavor, primarily thinking 300BLK as it would allow me to hunt deer in the bush.

So what all would be required? New barrel obviously. Can a gunsmith take the original gas block, etc and install it on the new barrel?
Anyone tried it yet?

I looked into it but it got put on the back burner due to changing employers, moving, etc.

Anyway, you'd need a barrel extension and gas block/sight base assembly. You'd likely have to steal both parts off a donor barrel. Depending on your capabilites, you could make your own. This will drive the price of the conversion through the roof.

It's kind of an interesting idea in any event. So aside from the barrel extension and gas block/sight base assembly, would you need anything else - ie: could you run the same BCG? What kind of issues do you think might come up with the gas system?

Well out of my area of expertise, but I think it would be pretty slick shooting subsonic out of a Tavor. ;)

I think 300 Blackout offers more potential, since the ammo is about the same price - and you can shoot both subsonic and supersonic. In addition, same magazines for sure - and possibly BCG. With 6.8SPC you'd need separate magazines and BCG.

Already have an RFB but if they had kits for the Tavor I would ditch the RFB and just use the Tavor. As 300 BLK ammo is damn near impossible to find. I can actually find 6.8 at most of my local stores now 300 most people haven't even heard of it.

Yup the FAL mags suck balls.

But yes if either 300 or 6.8 were options I would buy one. At least with 300 blk the bolt is the same and so are the mags. So the conversion would be easier
 
Yeah here in Alberta it has to be above .23 caliber in order to hunt with. That's why 300BLK sounds so intriguing. Barrel change only. If I can steal the barrel extension and gas block/sight assembly from the original barrel as Armedsask mentioned then it should just require a custom barrel. Which as a side benefit should make it more accurate as well.
That is the hope anyways.
I don't have to worry about waiting for ammo to start flowing in as I can reload my own.
 
I am think I am going to try and take on this project in 300 BLK. Talked to my favorite gunsmith and he is up for the challenge so maybe in a few months I will report back with either good or bad news.
 
IIRC There was a tavor up for sale last month that included a spare 14" barrel in .300 black out.

IMO .300AAC is more appealing than a 6.8 SPC. 6.8 SPC is so000000000000000000 2010.
 
Isn't the SAAMI spec for 300 Blackout a 1:8 twist? From some searching online, I read that a 1:8 twist rate is a "compromise" with a bias towards the heavy / long bullets. So called "over spinning" a light bullet will not have a negative impact on accuracy, however not spinning a heavy bullet fast enough will make things go down hill fast.

From what I understand, 1:8 is ideal for stabilizing subsonics. I am completely new to 300 Blackout, so I'm learning as I go along. There's nothing wrong with 6.8SPC; 300 Blackout is probably more ideal for the Tavor because you can utilize the existing BCG and magazines. Apparently 300BLK (supersonic) and 6.8SPC are fairly comparable in terms of performance.

Manufacturing a custom 6.8SPC Tavor bolt would probably be prohibitively expensive (unless you could mill out an existing 5.56mm bolt). Ammunition costs are going to be about the same.

Regardless, it will be an expensive project since you'll most likely need to cannibalize your existing barrel for parts (not unlike an ACR).
 
You could always get your barrel rebored and re-chambered to .300 BLK. Ron Smith can do this work, and it will be vastly cheaper than having someone build you a new drop in barrel from scratch. Call him at 1-403-631-2405

I guess that's always an option, too. The NR Tavor barrel isn't exactly renowned for it's accuracy, though. A fluted match barrel with an integrated flash hider will be a bit lighter as well as reduce the overall length by 1.5". Regardless, it's pretty much a one-way trip to 300BLK (insofar as the barrel is concerned anyway).

I don't think the pencil barrel on the Tavor is big enough to be bored out to 30 cal anyways. I am thinking a heavy match stainless fluted barrel with integrated flash hider as well.
