You should give me an exact gps location so I know where the goat are.

Start here:
Top secret goat location.
:p
Actually its a LEH hunt so there are only four other guys in BC worth keeping secrets from. I'm sure people will figure it out within the first couple pics.....

OK, out the door! One minor stop for salt for the hide and then I can sleep while the missus drives. Dang she's handy! :D

ha ha ha......

Great adventures to begin. Good luck and get a fine trophy. Being up there is 90% of the fun.
Elky.....(soon to be going dark for an elk tour of duty.)

Your gonna have a great time. Hope you got lots of Candied salmon, it is easier to carry the extra 1000s of calories then it is to climb "that" mountain with out em. (never let it be said that Jaydog is not ambitious) Save a bit of tendon for the sheep.

First dibs on his truck come thursday AM.

I'm back and have good news- everyone survived the hunt. The bad news is that includes the goats..... :p:redface:

The round trip on foot was just over 20 miles and 5200 feet of elevation gain. We saw goats that were shootable on more than one occasion but never in spots that were recoverable or when telling females from males was clear. (I saw three nannies with wide bases and curved horns- not cool!)

The third morning I got up at first light and climbed up to the transition between alpine meadow and bare rock- about 6300 feet of elevation. There I spotted a group of about 6 sheep with at least one billy that lay down as I was watching. After a 20 minute crawl I was about 50 yards away with only a small bump in between us. If I crawled up the goat path I would be facing his side, but if I went around the side of the bump I would be facing his back. The only problem was the goat had intentionally lay down with a sheer ledge behind him! I made my way around the edge and up with a bit of sweat and carefully ignored the long drop below me. With only another body length to go I knocked a large boulder loose and sent it rumbling down the mountain. That pretty much sealed it. :( The goats got up, casually checked me out over their shoulder and moved off up higher. Being totally exposed now they checked me out from above as I froze in place and did my best 'rock' impression :bangHead: and then headed across a sheer cliff to spend the rest of the day napping and eating on a small green ledge. It was an easy shot, but there was zero chance of recovering a goat so I hung out and enjoyed the afternoon watching them do what goats do.

In the end it was still a great hunt. The weather was beautiful, watching the blue moon rise in the mountains with the missus was pretty awesome and now we know how to get in and out and where to camp. Our next trip will most likely be in October but even with the season ending in November I don't want to leave it too late and have to do all that hiking in snow. We also met one of the other LEH draw winners, with three of his friends that came along for the experience. Great people to sit around the fire with, keen hunters and since he is there for a full week I expect his is shooting *my* goat as I type this! :p:p

Pics to follow. We got home last night after midnight and I'm a little behind on my sleep. I also only have this week for my feet to heal then I have two weeks chasing sheep, caribou and goats up in the Serengeti of BC.

Good report Jaydog.
An unsuccessful goat hunt is just part of the learning curve and does not indicate, as you noted, that it was not a great hunt. Kudos to you for not dropping a billy off a cliff where the result is unrecoverable or a broken mess.
Looking forward to the pics.

No pics? Huh? Only when youre a killer?
I want alpine and shale slides now!

You shall get your wish tonight. There are a bunch of good scenery ones, a crappy digiscope goat photo to show this wasn't just a camping trip :p and even some of my missus smiling with a 35lb pack.
Out of respect for the dial up crowd I just need to do a bunch of resizing first.
