What power setting is your scope on for 100m?

for the guys with variable optics, what do you shoot 100m with? i had a very experienced marksman explain to me that you don't need to go all the way to max power unless you can't see the target. he suggested that on a 5-20 to just try it at around 12-15.

I believe that scopes are for putting bullets on targets. Not for seeing holes in paper. Keep your scope to 10x or 12x and you'll maybe find yourself shooting tighter groups.

I totally do not understand this mentality. Why have the crosshair as large as the bullseye when you can zoom in and see your crosshair in the middle of the bullseye (or your aim point)? The better you can see your target, the better you can aim at it. I shoot maximum power every time, which for me is 32x.

This, of course, applies to bench rest shooting where my rifle is fully supported on sand bags.

I have Sightron( 8-32), Schmidt and Bender( 12-50) and Nightforce( 8-32) for high power scopes. Sightron optically is equal to the nightforce BR and better optically than a Nightforce NXS. It is all you need if you are on a budget.

I shot a 10. BR match yesterday with an SIIB 6.5-20 and had it on 20X always. Would have preferred an 8-32 or more.

Peter

When I shoot from a steady and stable position (for example, prone off my elbows with a sling, or prone with a bipod and sandbag, or sitting at a bench using a rest and bag), I use the highest magnification available to me. I use max available magnification at 500 yards. I use max available magnification at 20 yards. I use max available magnification at 100 yards. I use max available magnification at 1000 yards. I'm not intending to be repetitive for no good reason, but I am trying to point out that the magnification you might want to use has little if anything to do with the distance that you are shooting.

It is mentally much more comforting to shoot at a target when the target is made as large as you possibly can make it. Having said that, you can do a remarkably good job of aiming and firing shots quite precisely when your sight picture is not very big. Hunter class BR is fired at 100 yards using 6X scopes, and the aiming accuracy that those guys produce is pretty astounding. Various kinds of target rifle shooting are done with iron sights (i.e. no magnification at all), and a skilled shooter is able to aim and release shots to substantially better than 1MOA (which seems pretty unbelievable when you see what the sight picture looks like, yet the bullet holes in the paper prove it).

If you have it available, use it! The only time I dial back from max power is when the mirage gets too annoying. And then only enough to clear the image. Other than that, I like to see my heartbeats.

We have the same scopes and I agree that Sightron is a very good buy if you are on a budget. As regards magnification I use the max available unless conditions dictate that I dial down a bit.

I also really like the Nightforce BR models. I think my next one will be a Nightforce BR 12-42 or another Sightron with a fine cross hair. The Sightron has really clear glass and is very well suited for target purposes imo. I would love to try a March but the 5 year non-transferrable warranty has me shying away.

At what point is a marshmellow roasted? Really, man, eveyone has an opinion and what works for one does not work for the next.

As for me I use a 12-15 S&B on my air rifle and keep it at 50 power at 10M It helped me put 500 pellets through a hole that measured 9% larger than the diamter of a single pellet.

Just bought a 10x50 sightron a couple months ago. So impressed with the clarity of the optics. I use it between 30-50 power at 100m... I need a better rifle. The scope out shoots the ruger american .308...

+1 The more the better for me. I max out at 24x on my Sightron SIII, that's usually what I shoot at... Works for me.

That's what we are all trying to do. Nice shooting!
