Prohibited by a hair - FINAL OUTCOME

Can some one riddle me this.

Why is it an auto loader gets to be measured from the bolt face but a revolver gets measures from the forcing cone and not the back of the cylinder/reciever face? Seems to me an awful lot of revolvers got prohibited when they should be just fine.

No riddle, it was a deliberate act - at the time you'll remember that most PD's were switching from revolvers to semi-autos. Most PD revolvers were 4 inch barrels, thus set the measuring reg up so that none of those cheap police turn in revolvers got into civillian hands.

The verifier has submitted the photographs and made calls over the months. I really don't know what I can do. Is this something only the verifier can look after or is there something I can do?

Finally after almost six months a decision has been made. Verifier has just informed me that the RCMP have made a decision on my gun BUT they will not tell him what it was. I have to wait for the official letter. More to come!!!!

Just talked to the Verifier. The CFC folk are looking into my case. Their concern is if they do change the status of my handgun, is that they would have to change the status of all the other guns of the same make and model and barrel length. They state that there are only six of these in Canada so I really don't see a problem. I will post more when I find out.

Incidently, this is absolute BS - they don't have to change them all - I know someone who has 2 Prohib guns and 2 more identical guns that aren't prohib. This is done on a one gun at a time basis - like some supposedly 4 inch K Frame Smith revolvers are restricted because when the barrel was fitted it gapped at minimum (.004) far enough out that the barrel measures 105.2mm from the forcing cone.

They won't tell the verifier? What's the big deal? That you will find out before you get the letter.

Rimmed or Rimmless Cartridges?

There are regular .22 RF, not those weird rimless/caseless rocket rounds. Head space adds over 1 mm when correctly measured muzzle to breech, ergo 105.9+ which rounds to 106 (anything 105.01 and up is 106).

This handgun is obviously restricted. I'm not sure why some of these "Description Changes" turn into such nightmares, but it sometimes seems the more obviously the handgun is mis-registered, the harder someone in Ottawa fights to keep it that way.

weird, I got my Beretta Cougar done no problem and that barrel is like 105.02mm

eBay is your friend. Pick up a name brand all-steel digital caliper. Ensure that it goes to zero each time, from 106, and tell them so. Your written words should be something to this effect:

I have been trained in the proper operation of precision measuring tools

The digital caliper used in these pictures is a (make, model), serial number: (serial), which is a high quality measuring tool suitable for the presentation of evidence in court

This digital caliper provides consistent measurements and returns to zero each time (photo)

Add whatever court experience or years of firearms experience you have. Any relevant courses, eg. Photography, machining, commercial law in high school. Dig deep.

Get yourself 10 minutes worth of training from a machinist on how to make precise measurements, so that you ARE trained. And don't forget to end your very formal and carefully written email with the words indicating that you are prepared to provide this as sworn evidence in a court proceeding. My favorite conclusion is "respectfully submitted", provide your full name again and contact information.

You can probably borrow a quality caliper somewhere, but it's a bit harder to dismiss a man who shows up with his own professional tools.

Send this, CC the people involved including your verifier, and do this with the expectation that the right thing will happen. Persist, because you are right.

And don't forget to tell us your good news when you finally succeed!
