How Important is Accuracy in a Hunting Rifle?

i think confidence with your rifle is more important than .5 of an inch. that said i prefer groups of an inch or less. i tend to hunt with rifles i have shot alot. i used to own a ruger 300wm for many years back when i could't afford many rifles in the safe. acually couldn't afford the safe back then. it would shoot 1.25 to 1.5 inches at best with my hunting load. got me lots of animals and quite a few one shot kills. now my rifles shoot better the results are the same.

My main purpose for 1/2 inch or less groups is the journey in testing the integrity of the firearm, reloads and my shooting skill. Moreover, it gives me great confidence in the field that I have a very accurate and trustworthy firearm.

Once the journey is over then it is showtime at the range or cutline.................prone shooting at various distances. Final results is a safe and ejoyable day in the field holding my rifle in one hand and a thick beam whitetail in the other hand.

what ever dude.... Both of my hunting rigs are 1/2 MOA and I posted plenty of pictures in my 2 threads.... :slap:

Yes, but 2 or three or even 5 groups does not make a ½ moa rifle.
It would need to average ½ MOA to be so classified.

That means a lot of groups under ½ inch at one hundred to make up for the bigger groups.

It is very unusual to find a factory rifle that will average under moa, regardless of what people say on the 'net.
Therefore you lack credibility in your statement.

I've probably been shooting longer than you've been alive, so I have learned to
recognize a pasture patty when I see one.

We had a sight in on day at deer camp. This was followed by a standing shoot at a few used 22 caliber handgun targets I brought from the range. 50 yards.
I shoot regularly, and had reasonable groups with my old peep sighted '94 all in the black at least. One of the other guys is a typical Fudd hunter, shoots once a year, scoped rifle (BLR). His groups were pretty much all over that paper, looked like a 40 yard buckshot load had hit it.

But you know, his deer fall just as dead as mine do.

But then, our typical shots are 50 yards or less, and rarely go further.

However, I have proven that he hasn't a hope in hell of connecting (unless it's a fluke) at 300 yards. But that's a long story, and I've told it here before.

It doesn't matter a jot how well your rifle shoots from a lead sled or off off carefully constructed bags, the accuracy required to shoot animals is entirely with in you.

Ummmm Yup....I know a few fellas that can shoot clover leaves all day, but cant hit a deer to save their souls...

On the other hand, if you can't hit a 10" gong off of a rest at 200 yards, how do you expect to hit a deer in the vitals at 200 yards in the field?

I shot my 1st deer last year... Had to rest my gun against a tree I was so excited and Take the scope down to 4X to even find the deer that was 72 paces in front of me...

Or...If you do all your shooting off the bench how do you expect to shoot an animal off hand????Or know how to lead, with no lead required on a paper target??

If my hunting rifle and bullet of choice can do around 1.5" for 3 shots at 100, I'm happy. I also won't experiment with an inferior bullet(match) in order to shrink groups.

I've only come across 2 rifles that wouldn't accomplish the above, both are gone.

All my rifles have to shoot 1/2" at 100 yards, and all have to be WSM's. Using a non-magnum nowadays is unethical on so many levels.

I mean, it was ok back in the day. They just didnt know any better. But now that super accurate WSMs and hornady superformance ammo exists I couldnt imagine hunting any other way.

Closer to the truth ,than you think.

Dead is still dead,I think.

OK, I thought this thread was of some general interest, and it got me to thinking.
I went out to our range today and set up 8 targets at 225 yards [max distance at our club]
I shot the following rifles/ loads:
1. M700 Classic, 7x57. 140 Accubond/WLR primer.50 grains of RL17
2. M700 SS synthetic, 7mmSAUM. 160 Accubond/CCI250/58.5 grains of H4831SC
3. Vanguard, 300WSM. 165 GMX/CCI250/65 grains of RL17
4. PH Model 81 Classic, 308 Norma Mag. 200 Accubond/WLRM/78 grains of RL25
5. M700 Custom, 308 Norma mag. 180TTSX/CIL8½M/74 grains of IMR 7828
6. " " " 180 Accubond/CIL8½M/75 grains of Norma MRP
The worst group at 225 was just over 2" [1.1 moa]
The best group was right at ½" [Custom Norma Mag/TTSX]
The average for 7 groups was .8 moa.
Obviously, no issues with the equipment.
Just have to control the shooter, and all will be well.

In my case, its not an easy thing to control the shooter.Glad i still get buck fever, after hunting whitetails for ,well, forever.Nothing gets the stuff happening more ,than seeing the first mauler.
