So I have a standard M-305 as well as an 18.5 inch shorty.

I want to scope one of them... but can't decide which.

Basically I want to leave one stockish with the open sights and then mod the other scoped one.

I keep flipping back and forth between doing either. I need some peer pressure help lol

I've been planning on building a "long" range rifle out of a standard length m14, and doing a CQB style build with a shorty, so I'm slightly biased to scoping out the standard :D

That's my leaning today... shorty is just asking for a CQB style build.

But then someday's I think maybe I should setup the shorty as a scout style rifle.

Maybe I just need more M14's? :nest:

Love the shorty in the KISS setup, was hitting the 250 yard gong with ease in the sitting position on Saturday...mind you the gong is 3'x3', still a hoot!!

You should try my CASM MRD mount on the shorty. The JPOINT red dot weighs nothing and the MRD mount hood protects it well. Flip the rifle upside down on a tabletop and the hoods acts to balance the rifle nicely.

Funny enough I was looking at your site earlier today after reading the issues with scope mounting on another Norc M14.

it looks pretty neat, and quite the small and easy to attach mount

I said other because barrel length is only a small part in the decision.

Scoping a rifle (like a 3x-4x minimum) should be done in order to increase the shooter's ability to place the shot closer to where it needs to be. This is usually ony an issue at 'longer ranges' (like 100m and up).

Now, whether the barrel is long or short has little impact. If the rifle's groups are tight enough then attempting shots at longer ranges is a great idea. If a shortie's groups are tight, the go for it! Some long range rigs are built with shorter barrels in order to increase the rigity of the barrel and reduce ES and SD from shot to shot. Yes, the muzzle velocities are lower, but so is the vertical dispersion (in theory).

Anyway, without going into more detail, go for it! If you and your rifle/ammunition can produce groups worth mentioning, scoping the rifle is a great idea.

There's no shame in scoping a shorty and I'd have done it if I wanted a 'short' range precision M1A.

Funny you mentioned that about the shorty... I did find the shorty was more consistent in groupings at 100m and 200m. My range is opening up a 300m and 400m next month so I want to stretch out my 308 fun.

Maybe some quality time with the irons behind each one is in order to determine the best candidate :ar15:
