SVT-40 purchase

Finally got another one. This is a refurb '42 Izhevsk. I haven't had a chance to shoot it yet, but it's all cleaned and lubed up. I'd post some pics, but I'm sure you guys don't want to see another refurb SVT-40

Can't wait to shoot this one. I do have a question, however. I've been firing milsurp ammo (chinese 60's production) and it works great, but cleaning has really become a pain in the butt (want to make sure I get ALL those darned salts out of the works)

Can anyone recommend a brand of commercial ammo that works well with the SVTs? I'd preferrably like to try something in SP as I've only shot jacketed ammo and would like to see the difference in performance (and maybe take it hunting if I find it accurate enough!). Any opinions would be appreciated!

I would shoot mfs soft points. I don't like shooting any brass cased ammo in the svt. The fluted chamber is pretty hard on them. If you shoot 200 grains bullets make sure you adjust the gas settings accordingly probably 1.1 will do the job.

I've shot MFS 203 grain with a setting of 1.3

Anyone know the proper front post height? Or at least a starting point? My 42 will hit 12 inches low at 100 yards on the 100 m setting. I can come close to the center at the 200m setting if I use the full sight and let the tip of the sight go proud a touch. I don't like guesstimating sights when they are adjustable.

A seasoned gunnut on this board wrote a while back that he does not clean his rifle after firing corrosive ammo. Instead he fires a couple of rounds of non-corrosive to clean it out.

Does anybody else do this? What do you guys think of the practice?

I never tried and i wont try, i'm too greedy to waste non corrosive ammo when i have somes

Clockwise 1/2 - 1 turn and test it...take your sight adjustment tool with you.

I'm just guessing with that too...mine shot low when I got it but I don't remember how much I turned the front sight down.
I just kept adjusting in small increments til it was good.
But it should get you closer to where you wanna be...there is a formula that takes distance between sights and calculates how much to move them but I don't know it.

1.25 turns will give you twelve inches at 60 yards

She shoots fine now.
