So I just received my Norinco 305 that I bought from a fellow gun nut in the mail today. Very excited to say the least and the seller was awesome.

Unfortunately when I got it out of the shipping box and started to play with it I had difficulty putting the mag into the housing. I thought that maybe this was because I've never handled an M14 before and perhaps I wasn't putting it in at the right angle, but after trying for a while it still wouldn't go. Eventually with a lot of help it did fit, but then was quite literally stuck and wouldn't release. Managed to finally get the mag out though.

Has anyone else experienced this? Is the magazine housing somehow too small? If so, how can it be fixed?

I really wish I could make it to Hungry's workshop this weekend to get some advice and assistance, but sadly I can't.

What year is the rifle and what size is the mag? Those pesky little 5 rounders can be a pain to seat/remove by nature.

I had mag seating/removal issues with my 2007. Ended up the mag release/catch roll pin was pooched (gonzo, 50% missing length wise), thus the mag latch was never in the correct position. Replaced the pin and haven't had issues since.

Don't know about the year, just bought it used.

Mine has 2007 stamped on the receiver. Nothing on yours? 2007's are known for bad roll pins.

Tilt and lock mags systems don't work well with stubby 5 rd magazines.
Its a lever as well. So, get some 5/20s.
BTW Did my jump course 8517. AIC 8702. Seeing you have wings as an avatar.

That 5 rounder is good for hunting. The rest of the time, run the 5/20's especially for CQB or Service Rifle. Easier to grab hold of under stress! :D

The 5 rounders are NORMALLY a big PITA to get out of the mag well. Not to worry, that is par for the course. When I did hunt with my M14 (TRW made back in 1991), I used a 20 rounder (easier to carry pointing down), but hardly had a need to use more than ONE round on a groundhog (North of Orangeville and around the Singhampton, ON area) using 125 gr Speer TNT handloads.

Blowed 'em up real good!

Cheers,
Barney

Glad I'm not the only one who likes to do some pest control with an m14. I can recall on one shoot trying to get that 5 rounder out as gophers were popping their heads up mocking me. Needless to say that was the last time I used the 5 rounder on a gopher hunt, got em back for mocking me too. :D
