So the wife told me "no more guns!, so I came up with a brilliant plan. When she asked me what I wanted for my b-day, I told her a hunting rifle for her:D

So before we get started just keep in mind that we live on Vancouver Island and our deer aren't that big compared to the mainland species, secondly there is a budget of a max of $600 for the rifle but would prefer to spend a little less.

The rifle
I've been thinking stevens 200, marlin xl7, or one of the savages.
Calibre- somewhere between 243-270

The shooter
So my wife is pretty small, all of 5'2 and 115lbs wet, so LOP is sometimes an issue plus she doesn't enjoy huge recoil hence the calibre spectrum.

What I'm looking for is a little insight on the rifles above from anyone that has experience with them. I'm open to any other suggestions. I have been checking the EE regularly but it's pretty much just full of 300wsm.

If your looking to sell something in any of these variations pm me.

Thanks

See if you can find a Howa Youth/Compact in .243 Win. They are great little rifles and will come in under budget.

Will defiantly look into the howa, I thought about a youth gun to help with LOP. Just have to check with the local gun shop, we have a wws in town but I'm a little tired of their bs and normal run around when trying to order something.

Or a Browning Micro in 7mm-08.

I think a browning product is a little out of the budget, and a 7mm-08 might be a little more shoulder punishment than she likes.

I forgot to mention she is a fan of wood/blued, she says it's what a rifle is suppose to look like.

There are a number of cartridges in your range which are worthy of consideration. I have never hunted island deer, but have seen plenty of them, and I suspect a .243 would be effective medicine for them. The .270 would almost be overkill, and while not excessive in the recoil department, may be a little more stout and noisy than your wife would like dealing with. You might consider adding the .260, 7mm'08, and the 6.5x55 Swedish to your list of possibilities - all very mild mannered and capable cartridges cartridges. The 250 Savage in a model 99, or even in a bolt action would be another great option, especially if you're willing to look at a proven classic cartridge. I wouldn't be giving up on the EE just yet. Although some of the sellers no doubt have their firearms overpriced, there are also reasonable deals to be had on rifles outside of the big boomer class.

270 is gunna kick a whole lot more then 7 mm 08

Can someone quickly explain the difference between a 7mm and a 7mm-08? I have experience with a 7mm from when I was younger and I remember it kicking like a mule.

My wife has shot a axis 270 and didn't mind the recoil, any pill 150gr and under is plenty good enough for our island deer.

you most likly shot ther rem 7mmMag...thats a different breed then the 7mm 8.

ya, the 7mm mag packs a bit of a punch and tends to be over kill for killing most things that need to be killed....some times. Have you had any experience with the .243?

The 25-06 is loud & seems to eat as much deer meat as I do :). It is a good killer though. The 260 in a Youth or compact is nice (Ruger makes one). a 7x57 or 7 mauser is a very nice cal with mild recoil (keep away from the 175gr). If you only plan to hunt the Island deer a 243 should be enough. A little bigger required to comfortably hunt the big bear you have.

A 7mm-08 is a .308 Win necked down to 7mm. Neck that .308 down to 6.5mm and you get a .260 rem. Go one step further, to 6mm and you have a .243 Win. I've shot a few VI blacktails and they don't need more than a .243 Win.

I have a remmy 700 in 308 loaded heavy and slow for black four legged friends, this is going to be strictly for deer. She does enjoy the bear hunts or bear meat so this is a strictly deer rifle. I have experience with 243 it was my first deer rifle, loved it,I guess I'm partially looking for a very flat shooting calibre. A savage 99 would be nice, she loves lever actions, and a browning would be top notch but I just can't see finding one in our budget. We just bought a house on 5 acres and had to do the roof so the budget for hobbies is a little tight, didn't even make it out salmon fishing once.

That Marlin XS7 in either 243 or 7/08 won't disappoint you or her.

They are accurate, handle like a Remington 700, c/w adjustable trigger & weaver style 1pc base and also have a very good pad.
