Looking for a deer rifle for the wife

I might be way out in left field here but maybe an Old Swede? I got myself one. Bought for under 300 dollars. Will shoot well under 1" MOA with any round i throw through it. With my re loads i can stack them ontop of one another. Recoile is less or close to the same as a .243 so it will be easy enough on the shoulder and well with the .264 140gr projectile it will bring the biggest of deer to the ground at any resonable range.

my wife shoots a ruger youth model77 in 7/08,if i didnt ave my 280 rem i would have a 7/08 in a second, like it better than the 243,if she decides to go for bigger game she will still have enough gun,but this is just my opinion.as for make, take her to shop and get one that fits her.

Can someone tell me the load range for a 7mm-08? I'm still leaning towards 25-06 or 260, start talking 6.5mm and it might not be her gun for to long :D

As for taking her into the gun shop, our local one usually has to order it in (couple weeks max) or we have wws which order like once a year, rather help out the smaller locally owned shop vs the wholesaler.

My 11 yr old grandson is a lot smaller than the lady and he shoots my Stevens 200 in 7mm08 almost as well as I can. He also shoots a 243 in a Savage Axis youth model and he can drive tacks with that one.

Either would be plenty big enough for deer

I give a big second vote for tradex husqvarnas in 6.5x55.
that m65 tikka posted above looked great, but is a little high in your price range. Consider these two:

23223- Husqvarna Commercial M96 in 6.5x55. Very good bore. Weaver see thru mount and a Fontaine 2-7x32 scope. Firing pin tip sticks out of cocking piece. Shows some handling marks and slight blue wear. Overall very good condition.
$295

23222- Husqvarna M96 Sporting Rifle in 6.5x55. Good to very good bore. Original configuration. Floorplate shows slight blue wear. Shows some handling marks. Overall very good condition.
$395

I've been doing a little more reading on the malin xl7 and all the reviews are good, and would come in well under budget ($339.95+ tax) brand new.

The rifle is faily light (6.5lbs) and comes in a youth model. A 22" barrel with 1:10 twist and includes a 1pcs base. The rifle has a "pro fire trigger" which Im hoping someone with this rifle could let me know if this anything like the savage accu trigger which I'm a huge fan of. At that price I could also afford to put decent glass on it and be close to budget for a rifle and scope ( was planning on $600 for rifle and $2-300 for glass). Now if anyone has any horror stories of this rifle please let me know.

Can someone quickly explain the difference between a 7mm and a 7mm-08? I have experience with a 7mm from when I was younger and I remember it kicking like a mule.

My wife has shot a axis 270 and didn't mind the recoil, any pill 150gr and under is plenty good enough for our island deer.

7mm just refers to the caliber, your probably thinking of the 7mm Remington magnum which does have some recoil. The 7-08 is just a necked down 308 and hence shoots lighter bullets. For the 7-08 many people use 120gr Ballistic Tips to reduce recoil and for deer sized game these are fine, for larger stuff 140gr Partitions or Barnes TSX bullets would be better. For what its worth this is my wife's choice and she is built lower to the ground than yours.

Kelly is your man for 7mm-08 info, he's loaded. He'll be along shortly, hopefully. Unless he's busy piloting a combine out there in Saskland! Or hunting for Sask-Squatches around Lac La.
243 and 260 also would be excellent choices for your gal. Just open the wallet a wee bit more and you'll find a real nice quality down sized rifle. I can't offer any help or suggestions in the bargain buster rifles. Good Luck.
My oldest son just bought a new Savage Light Weight Hunter in 260. Look for a Rem Mod 7 or a Browning Micro for the rifle. I have both of them in 7mm-08, and love them, but 243 will serve you well out there. Pre '64 Win Mod 94 30-30, maybe? Will be in budget, great to carry, fun to shoot, will get the job done and should be easy to find.

To the OP...For the tiny deer on this island and the short range they are often seen at a .243 or 30/30 is more then enough. So I second the Savage youth rifle idea.

My other choice would be a 6.5x55, 7-08 is also another good option but not as common on this island as .243 and 30/30.

BTW I like your plan as I did the same with my wife... She aced her CORE hunting exam, has her Pal/RPal and added important days in her planner...Gunshows, hunting season etc. :D

Is she OK with open sights?

If so, a 858 would be a good choice.

- Enough punch for a deer size target.
- Not much recoil to begin with, add a brake and it's like shooting a 22lr

As an added bonus, she'll be the envy of all the guys out there!

Wife is 4'11" ( I don't dare say the weight ) and was recoil shy.
Bought her an H&R Youth Compact single shot in .243, worked up some light loads and after an hour at the range she was confidently firing off full loads without a flinch.
As a bonus, it's a great little rifle for me to pack along in the woods for cougar defence.

Plan on doing some mainland hunting for mulley and always have my fingers crossed for limited entry for elk on the island so want to option of throwing some heavier loads. One of my hunting partners got a white tail that was 192lbs on the hook dressed so there is the odd illusive monster to be found.

My wife aced her Pal and RPal also and got highest mark in her class for Core (1 wrong answer), I would of beat her :D but I've had my Core since I was young. If and when you can get your significant other to get involved it defiantly results in many more hunting trip :D

Doesn't your wife call you "Deer/Dear"...? Be careful what you ask for...!

A woman goes into a sporting goods store to buy a rifle. "It's for my husband," she tells the clerk.

Did he tell you what caliber to get?" asked the clerk."

"Are you kidding?" she says. "He doesnt even know that I am going to shoot him!"

:D I'm pretty sure it's dear :D
