Hey guys. Has anyone tried this rifle? I like Remington, but I can't seem to find anyone who has tried it enough to give me a decent review. They were pretty hard to find for a while there, as I think Remington discontinued them, but now it seems like they're all over the place. Any thoughts? I'm thinking of putting one together using the AICS system from Accuracy International. Thanks

That size of cartridge is too large to perform well in a 700 action. It needs a larger barrel thread diameter. And yes I know Remington produced it... stupidly so. They had a great opportunity to produce a scaled up version of the 700 that would have blown the others away... and they missed it. There are better actions for the large Lapua case than the 700.

it's awesome if you intend to use it and carry it.
Most of the other platforms are too heavy for cross country with gear. There are obviously more precision oriented rigs but with good glass you won't likely out perform the 700 unless you are a top competitor.

I have one but immediately pulled the barrel due to its short length.

Next week I'll be putting a 28'' broughton barrel on it with a better brake.

Rem700 MLR

there is Nothing wrong with the rem700MLR action for the 338lapua, I had great luck with 2 of them already, my second one did replace the .300 recoil lug, tune the action and locking lug, and there is nothing wrong with factory barrel, it does have a sloppy chamber, but that can be fix, and a good muzzle brake will help.

A 338 Lapua on a 700 Remington will not load up as hot as larger actions will. At least this has been the experience of a couple of customers...

The rear of the brass expands beyond resizing before there is any problem with primers or head expansion.

There just isn't enough solid metal around the rear of the chamber to prevent the chamber from expanding under pressure... expanding to the point of brass expanding... at least I believe that is what is happening.

I would prefer a smaller diameter cartridge on a 700 and load it to the nuts...

I had no problem with the rifle, it does need minor tunning that any Gunsmith know what to do can resolve the issue. I find that the barrel are more than adequate, but a better muzzle brake is needed to tame recoil, as to the brass problem, I din't have any problem.

Mine does not like hot loads. They have to be just about smak dab in the middle of the min and max loads my manual suggests, but once I am there I am getting around 7/8 moa on a decent day.

A very good packable rifle. If you intend to carry it in the bush and shoot it a lot, where weight is a concern, this is top dog. If ultimate precision is your goal, then other rifles may suit you better, but be prepared to pay through the teeth for it.

For the cost to gun ratio in .338LM, the Remington can not be beat.

Here is mine as it has been set up, used, and abused out to 1000 meters in the last year and a half.

You have a point guntech, there is less than .200" wall over the chamber to the bottom of the threads in Remington tennon. With tight threading that part of chamber would stop at receiver threads and that would stop the expansion but we all know how sloppy factory threads are. I can predict future removal of those barrels will be messy after couple of hundreds of heavy reloads..... With larger dia tennon and finer threads Savage has almost .250" wall over the chamber and much stronger set up that way (still border line strenght IMHO). Those factory barrels IMHO would be perfect to rechamber them to 338 Fed, 338-06 and such once the 338 Lapua chamber portion is cut off. I wouldn't mind snag one of those b/c I have LA LH Ruger action sitting iddle in my safe.

Is this the reason why there so many Savage 110 BA .338 Lapuas listed in the EE?. The barrel shank is only .005 larger in diameter on the Savage and roumor has it that they fail to extract Hornady factory loaded/fired ammo.

I've fired the Hornady stuff in a Savage 338LM as well as Lapua. Hornady gives a stiffer bolt lift and I might be crazy, but I think the Hornady cases have a slightly smaller casehead diameter. On my trim pilot caseholder, the Lapua cases hold nice and snug while the Hornady cases wobble right out!

I do not think its a rumour. Many internet posts describe problems with reloading Hornady brass, i.e stuck cases. However the problem often goes away when using Lapua brass. My own 338 extracted Hornady factory ammo fine. I don't have any intention of reloading it.

I have had 2 lapua cases out of 40 stick in the chamber after 4 times firing without bumping the shoulder. But that does not surprise me.

There are some gold gems of info from PEI ROB in this thread if your interested.

Probably not. Stuff on the EE seems to go in waves.

One guy puts his gun up for sale, and a few other guys decide to put up whatever it was that was an impulse buy and they did not get enough use/ enjoyment out of.

Some how I don't think that those rifles are used much....It's hard to enjoy it when every pull of the trigger cost you $5 bill or more.

Cost of ammo isn't the worst part, finding "good" places to shoot out to 338 type distances is getting harder to do.

With a little effort and a good bit of time, you can always find a place.

Many LR shooters have spots to stretch their rifles out. Problem is nobody shares, especially on the internet, for fear of another "Nonquon" debacle.
