257wby or 300win

The .257 is cooler, but better has to go to the 300 win; particularly since you didn't define any parameters.

If 100 hunters were armed with .257's and 100 with 300's, and they were all magically deposited in completely random hunting situations, I think the 300 hunters would be better off. They may, in fact, be better off than 100 hunters with most any other cardridge.

I used a .338 win mag on moose for many years with great success. Few years ago moved to a 7mm rem mag and have taken every animal I fired at with a single shot from pronghorn to bull moose. The big 7 is truly a versatile round and easier to shoot well than a .300. If you didn't already own a .375 then absolutely a .300 but you are covered for the heavy stuff. A .270 WSM or .270 Wby are also great choices.

I think everyone is forgetting that he already has a 375 Ruger. If he gets the 300 he then has 2 rifles that for all intensive purposes are the same. If he gets the 257 he covers a wider range of usefulness. For example, he wants to hunt moose, should he take the 300 or the 375. But replace the 300 with the 257 and then it is easy. If he wants to hunt on the prairie the choice is easy.

We have moose on the prairie. I like the .257 a rather lot, but its surpriseing how very little the .300 Win gives up in the wide open spaces.

I load the 180 NBT to 3150 fps in the .300 and the 100 NBT to 3500 fps in the .257. When both are sighted for 300 yards there's a couple inches difference in drop at 500 in favor of the .257. Most days its hard to shoot well enough to prove.

In exchange for those 2 inches, the .300 drifts a little less and delivers close to double the energy at 500. For fun, the .300 takes the Roys 500 yard figure and takes it out to 900.

I would like to try a 257 Wby Mag, I think it may be a sweet pea, but I could be wrong! The 300 WM would be too stout for me, I'm real sure! I don't like much more knock back than my 30-06 in a Ruger No.1 A (yeah, wishing it was an AB)! Love my AB's in 7X57 and 25-06.

You'll like it; .270 recoil and STW trajectory is sweet way to make deer sized animals go limp.
