I have a number of Australian Lithgow #3 Enfields. I was wondering what other colors of paint was used to denote condition? Mine are painted yellow at the bore. I also was wondering how to take it off, ammonia might effect the bluing.

I think the yellow paint was applied to prevent corrosion below the stock line. I wouldn't remove it, for history's sake, but that is my two cents.

Hate to tell you this, but I think yellow paint on an Aussie rifle means drill purpose.

I had one...it had a pitted dark bore. :(

.. The YELLOW PAINT, designates "Drill Purposes only". Although, allowance is made for them to pressed into limited service in an emergency.
The truly unsafe rifles were scarped/parted out....... David K

yellow

the bores are as good as the bores on a mint VAR M1 Garand. 1920 Lithgow barrel looks exc++. 1945's are the same. 1942's are not as good. no DP marks on any of them.

Yellow paint in Ozz was cadet. Marstar sold a pot full of them back in the 80's.
They had almost every date from first production up to the late 40's.

Growing up in Australia, actually the State of Victoria.

... Well, I don't know when that designation came into effect. BUT, the School I attended, admittedly way back when we wrote on Clay Tablets, but there was a very large Cadet Corps, along with Pipe Band, Quarter Guard and the whole nine yards. NONE of the rifles were marked with a yellow band, or any other identifying mark. Members of the Cadet Corp shot their issued rifles when in Camp ( Usually Pukapunyal (?) Army Camp )Nor were the Vickers, Bren's , Mortars and Owens. .... It may well have been different in other States, or come into practice after I left "the Lucky Country". ;) ...... David K

They are cadet corp rifles according to the americans collectors. So they are supposed to need cleaning etc.
