Man just picked this up, I thought I would never find one one of these non referbs. Its a Tula 1954r with a bunch of stampings all over the stock and not one X.... Plus its got a neat colour to it as well...

Do they come slathered in Cosmoline if they are not refurbished? Hopefully not...

I would imagine they would, why wouldn't they? Cosmoline is a storage grease, just because it's not refurbished doesn't mean it's not going to rot and rust away into nothing if there's no preservative applied to it.

If the gun was owned by someone, since it was new, and they took care of it, it wouldn't need to be packed in cosmoline.

I guess it depends where he got it. If it was from a store that buys crates of refurbs, then this one is probably a refurb too. It just happens to be a refurb that didn't need any work done. Just an inspection and a quick dip in the cosmoline tank. I guess that's basically the same as a non-refurb.

It's a great find, and very nice SKS.

A few weeks back I had a 1950r in my hands just like this 54r. It had just arrived at the local gun shop, and was still dripping cosmo. I didn't buy it however.

I suspect we may see more like these show up.

This is very likely. I'm under the impression that the amount of Soviet SKS rifles that escaped being sent to an armorer for refurbishment is little to none. With that said, rifles that were scarcely used due to where they were issued, such as to a prison guard or a police station, probably needed very little work done, if at all. This may be the where the majority of the non-refurbs come from: It was sent to Boris the armorer, Boris notices there's nothing really wrong with it, slathers some cosmoline and throws it in the "finished" pile. Since most of them were fairly well used somewhat roughly, that may be why there aren't a lot of non-refurbs around.

Just my two cents. Everyone knows what it's worth.

:agree:

It just could be... Good point!
