What kind of 2-way radios do you use hunting in the bush?

My cheapest handheld amateur radio beats all FRS/GMRS/CB radios by a huge margin.
30km range on a bad day.

+1! Where I hunt I always have repeater access as well, Peace of mind should I ever need help. Also have the hauling frequencies so I know where all the chip trucks are.

So I picked up a couple of Rino 610s. They don't seem to be loaded with any maps. So my next question is what do I do now? What kind of maps did you get and where did you find them?

I need topo for hunting and camping.

Thanks - KDubya

I loaded the free topographic map for Canada that is available on the internet. I loaded Manitoba and Western Ontario. I think its called Icarus.

Do youself a favour and buy ONLY the marine 5 watt radios. The VHS or w\e ones. They are 100x better than the normal radios. I have a set of Midland marine radios and me and my dad always can hear each other no matter how far in the bush we are. This is big northern ontario woods, the other radios didn't cut it at all.

Motorola radius cp200's with a base station acting as a repeater in my truck.

Park the truck on high ground and god damn do they get some awesome range.

They can also take one hell of a beating. :D Never afraid to rough around while carrying them.

Rino 120 and 130.
Send a text message????

This was something that frustrated me about the 120 model. I was given a 120 as a gift then purchased 3 more so I can bring them on hunts for others to use. The original one I got had the "Send Note" feature, the other 3 have a different version of software and do not allow text messaging.

The ones that do have the "Send Note" option are software version 5.5, the ones that do not have that option are the software version 3.9.

To find out what version you have you have to Main Menu - Settings- System- then Options (small box to the left of the X in the top right corner)- Software VERSION

Or you can simply hold down the joystick and see if the Send Note option shows up in the short cut menu.

Hypothetically speaking, Wrong Way is very correct. US radio's are much more powerful. We use Midlands and anything (US) above the 500 series is a true 5 watt radio. Never expect to get the distance that they advertise but with our 5 watt midlands, (If we had them) we get about 5 miles decently in the far northwest of Ontario. You can get them on sale for about 40 bucks per radio and for that price you get a 3 year warranty. We had expensive VHF radios but these were cheaper than getting just batteries and the range was just as good.

What we hypothetically use. The 735 or 795 series (can't remember right now) are excellent in the heavy north western ontario bush. No complaints here........ hypthetically. ;)

I am also a Rino user i have the 530hcx 5 watt that i bought in the states on ebay. with the topo maps its hard to beat, the transmition comes in super clear and no one has a problem hearing me. the only problem is that no one else in my camp has a 5watt radio so i have not yet tested the true capability of it yet.

Started with Cobra PR WXC, not satisfied .... change to Midland GTX 1050, much better may be 3 or 4 time the range of the Cobra, less interferences and clear, but not near the advertised range. Satisfactory for our hunting territory.

Another vote for Garmin Rino 530 we now have 4 on them in camp. Way more GPS features than I need. But great tool with the good radio and it's ability to show you where everybody else is.
We are all getting older and each has his medical issues so for us it's a safety issue.

I also carry a an Icon VHV radio in the canoe/ATV. It radio capabilities is far superior to the Garmin. It is for emergency situations only.

Both the Rino and the Icon where about $500 a piece, but what the hell my friends and I are worth it.
