SVT-40 VS Norinco M14

The only way to go is to get both. They are so cheap might as well get both and have the joy of shooting them. But remember if it is for hunting the .308 round can be bought anywhere.
 
I own both and it's not an apples to apples comparison.

Out of the box (bubble wrap, whatever) they shot very similar groups off the bench @ 100.

If you just want to go out and poke holes in stuff, you cannot beat Russian surplus. Ammo is cheap (look at the banners above, they are still selling 880rnd cases with free shipping) and you don't have to worry about salvaging brass if you are reloading. Cleaning can be a PITA but once you have stripped the rifle a couple times it's no biggie. There are no mods available and there aren't really any options for scoping the rifle unless you find a rifle equipped with the sniper notch in the receiver and want to pay BIG $$$ for repro mounts/optics or you're willing to have a mount welded to the receiver for a current model PSO. If you have spent any time with an SKS it's very similar just bigger bullets and no folding bayonet.

The Norc/Poly M14s/305 is a rifle with so many possibilities for someone who wants to mod their rifle. SAGE stocked sniper? You bet. DMR set up? Sure. CQB rifle? Why not? The shorties point really nice with a red dot or holo.

Buy a Russian, enjoy it for what it is. Buy an M14s/305 and find out how far down the rabbit hole really goes =)

Define "better"
Until you give us a bit of a hint as to what you hope to do with it, all you are getting is what is good for someone else.

I like to study the technology and method of operation, so I bought both, and many other semi autos. But if I tell you "Get both!", that's not really helpful to you at this point.
 
I have both, I shoot similar groups with both. The M14 is customizable, but has no history (talking the specific Chinese gun here, not the entire platform). Ammo is cheaper with the SVT, but corrosive. I like the sights better on the M14, and the mags are cheaper. The SVT has an adjustable gas system. As you can see there are benefits to both.

If I were to rate them, I'd give them identical scores (just in different ways). If I were to pick one, it would be the SVT because the supply won't last forever.

I have chargers for both too. If you have good chargers for the Mosin/SVT then there's no issue. Unfortunately the ones I bought were crap and it's faster for me to detach the mag and load it by hand.
 
M-14s;
YES you can consider getting your M-14 in a couple of weeks, we have a container load due to land in about 7-10 days on the west coast.

if you simply want to shoot a high powered plinker, the M305 is your bets bet.
The SVT-40 is a historical firearm with history. It's ok to shoot them, but your SVT-40 won't likely loose value and will increase in value.

But if you have no interest in collecting and simply want to shoot - M305 all the way.
They are both nice.
 
Shooting both, i do prefer the SVT, a well preserve Tokarev is a nice piece of mecanik a 305 is nice it is a replica that shoot good, now if you are talking Garand, it is another story... JP.
 
it depends what your in to. a norinco m14 is new and has lots of options. a svt 40 is old used in battle and has a history that you cant get with off the shelf guns. as per ammo their about the same they shoot every similar.
 
I had an svt-40, cool gun but it liked to jam, not too reliable so I got rid of it. I'd buy another one in better condition to collect, but I wouldn't use it as a shooter. I have an M1a too and would take that over the svt-40. I know you can't really compare an m1a to a svt-40, and as much as I hate chineese knock offs go with the m-14

Did you adjust the gas system?
