Hello people more knowledgeable than myself.

I've shot a decent number of pistols, but am about to start buying my own guns and want to know your thoughts on the ideal 9mm semi auto. Please don't reply with "well it depends on what you like", I want to know what YOU like, and why.

Thanks in advance.

M&P Endurance Test Ends
10-Dec-08 – 15:24 by ToddG

As we reported on Monday, the M&P9 endurance test gun — pictured left, brand new still in its box back in April — finally cracked its slide at 62,333 rounds. While the gun continued to run without any stoppages, Smith & Wesson asked that we send the pistol to them for inspection.

The engineers inspected it, declared it safe, and suggested we keep shooting.

Then the lawyers intervened.

So, the test is officially at an end.

For those keeping track, the gun fired 62,333 rounds beginning on 22-Apr-08 and ending on 5-Dec-08, a total of 228 days, or 273.4 rounds per day.

104 total range trips, for 559.4 rounds per range day.

344 total hours on the range, for 181.2 rounds per hour.

The gun traveled through twenty U.S. States as well as British Columbia (go Abbotsford!). More than fifty people shot the gun during the test.

But all good things, as they say, must come to an end. Thanks go out to everyone at Smith & Wesson, especially product manager Joe Bergeron, Senior VP for Sales & Marketing Leland Nichols, Consumer Program Manager & Champion Shooter Julie Golob, and most of all Dir. of Military Sales Ernest Langdon who first brought all of the players together to make things happen. All four of them took their turn adding to the test gun’s round count, too:

Joe Bergeron (#50,001)

Leland Nichols (#50,000)

Julie Golob (#40,000)

Ernest Langdon (#30,000)

So, what’s next? Stay tuned and find out …

Train hard & stay safe! ToddG

I like a Glock 17, cause they are cheap, parts are everywhere and they are simple to take down.

A Beretta 92fs is also a great gun for the price.

CZ75 or Shadow, Sig 226 is a great gun and you can upgrade to several calibers. For the money, a CZ75b is a great pistol, for about $650 you get all steel construction, accurate out of the box.

Hold a few and fire some if possible. It's a decision only you can make. I've held a few Beretta 92's and they feel good, never fired one. Had a CZ75 and now have Sig 226 & a 239 in 9mm. Sigs are hard to beat.

I started with a CZ Shadow. Absolutley hands down no regrets. Nice kick, decent to shoot financially, sleek in design and well built. Forgiving to shoot too.

I've never done the M&P9 range kit, but I would have chosen that one had the CZ not be in contention.

I was going to pick this up but I read a lot of reviews that the slide gets very loose after a few thousand rounds. This info was the final nail in the coffin for me http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/archive/index.php/t-180878.html

Pretty old thread. I'm pretty sure if there any problem from back then have been addressed by now. Haven't heard of any problems like that lately. Every new gun model has it's share of growing pains. Look at the Glock Gen 4's when they first came out.

Strange, after 30,000 + rounds I haven't noticed this - maybe I just need to bang another thousand or ten through it. Incidently, it'll still put rounds on to half of a 3x5 card (I'm cheap, so I cut index cards in half for targets) from 15 yards on demand. This using MFS 115 grainers (cheap steel case), on an older M&P that's of the right age to have the "wrong twist" to stabilize 115 grainers.

I think my ideal 9mm pistol would be a SIG-Sauer P226. Number two choice would be a Glock 17.

However, since I saw it was soon to be available I ordered a FMK 9C1 Generation 2 from Arma-Coat. http://www.arma-coat.ca/frame.cfm?ItemID=51&CategoryID=6 $469.95 for a current production American made gun. I want to see where the quality/cost divide is. Plan is to pick up whatever the most similar Norinco and Glock pistol would be, and then do side by side tests of them. That said, if someone offered to give me a pistol, any pistol, I'd go with the SIG. I just want to explore entry level options right now. Maybe get into IPSC and horrify people with the fact that my gun costs less than their monthly ammo budget. I'd really like to see how the FMK holds up compared to a Glock 17.
