XCR-L 7.62x39 Pistol Mags: 13x 5.56mm

Here is a visual analogy of loading a unmodified 7.62 mag with .223.

Tagged for interest. Had this very idea a couple of weeks ago but didn't follow through as I didn't want to pay for a mag I didn't have a gun for. Maybe I'll reconsider and beat Blaxsun to the test phase haha.

Have to go buy one, I wasn't even sure if it would fit in the standard 5.56 mag well.

Got the same idea off of blaxsun the other day.

Excuse the crappy pics but they definitely fit.

I'll try and do a range report if I get to it before someone else does.

seems that the majority of the worries about the feeding of .223 from 7.62x39mm comes from the taper of the mag required to properly feed 7.62x39mm.
with these straight mags, that problem is eliminated.

Aren't the internal dimensions of the mags different though?

Ok, enough guess work. Time for some dry testing and product comparison. I went out and bought a 7.62x39 mag even though I don't have a stanag mag gun in that calibre to test this out. Curiousity got the better of me...

LAR .223 Mag on Left, XCR 7.62x39 Mag on Right. Both in original form.

Picture 1 thru 3... As new and assembled. The LAR mag is obviously shorter, and a little curved forward while the XCR is longer and box shaped. They share the same width and front to back dimensions.

While there is some difference in the front "legs of the followers (223 being long front and back, the 7.62 being short up front), there is little difference between the areas that the round seats to. It would appear that the only real difference between these two mags is the outside length of the mag and some very minute differences in the "hump" in the followers where the round sits. The hump on the XCR mag is a little shorter front to back, and a little taller in the mag but not by very much. All other areas of the mags are simliar in design. Even the springs for each mag have the same number of coils.

Potential problem with the VERY minor diffences in the followers.... The second to last 223 round wants to jump out of the 7.62x39 mag. Unknown what will happen when more rounds are seated into the mag as I only have two snap caps, but a double feed appears to be likely that a double feed will occur when down to the last 2 (or few) 223 rounds in the XCR 7.62x39 mag.

Function tests with live fire to follow. Will report back when complete, but this make take a couple of days due to scheduale and such.

I think putting a 223 follower in would be changing it enough to cause legal issues. A 7.62x39 mag with a 5.56 stamped follower would have to be pinned to ten as a pistol mag which defeats the purpose. Would be the same as any other modification which would take away from the original intended use. I'd be more likely to experiment with different 7.62x39 follower designs to avoid that issue. With different "hump" designs.

I thought about that too, thing is once the 556 follower is in it, if it still holds ten 762 then is it still modifying as the capacity is the same?
