I hadn't really thought of the 7mm RM as a good choice for light recoiling or mild loads. But my wife is interested in shooting and I figured I'd try and find a nice, mild load that would still be effective on most big game in North America.

I loaded some 150gr Partitions with 49.0 grains of IMR 4064 in new W-W brass primed with Remington 9 1/2s.

Well, I am very impressed. I shot one group with it (first test so I didn't bring any more) and was pleasantly surprised by a 0.325" group.

The 35P said the average velocity was 2672 fps. This load will shoot flat enough to take game out to longish ranges (2000 fps out to 350 yards), and have enough go for Elk and Moose too. At the same time it has significantly reduced recoil.

It's like having a 7x57, which is not too bad at all.

That's a good load and good idea to introduce someone to shooting with a rifle you already own, be warned when she really gets into it she will want something of her own. :)

Makes one wonder why "manly men" need a magnum to shoot game at the same distances doesn't it! LOL!

I'm thumbs up for introducing a full sized rifle cartridge with a light load to a potential new hunter/shooter. My first rifle was a 30.06 with a reduced load when I was 14. I still hunt with that rifle today, just with full size loads and a lot more power. The beauty is that you never have to buy a new rifle if they like it, its easy to sell if you no longer require it, nor do you have to upload for more bang if its not needed.

I chuckle at the ideas for a new rifle...I have thought of every one of those as well! And this line of thinking led to to the testing. A light recoiling, easy to shoot rifle will make for more fun, therefore more practice and better efficacy in the field.

But a light rifle is limited in some ways. What if I got something a bit more stout, but fashioned the load for ease of shooting? I could then, if need be *ahem*, crank it up a notch or two if I wanted to "test" it out or something. :)

But in all seriousness, the 7mm has a fairly large case capacity so I wasn't sure how this load would work out - starting load fron Nosler #4. I'm glad I tried it.
