Looking for my first shotgun, need a fun gun that is also very affordable. I was looking for an older shotgun and saw some chambered for 2 3/4. What are everyones thoughts on this?
Was looking for a gun just to shoot at targets, hopefully some duck hunting, and possibly some deer. Will I run into problems hunting with a 2 3/4 instead of a 3 or 3 1/2 ?

Thank you!

Also any good websites to get bulk 12 gauge ammo, i want lots :50cal: ? thanks! preferably one in Ontario!

Don't know about the bulk ammo but 2.75" chambered shotgun is plenty for deer.Make sure you sight it in and practice. That will let you know how far you should be shooting.Try different brands of slugs as every shotgun seems to have it's own preference.Cheers Bac4

2-3/4" slugs are ample for anything you would use a slug. The 3" versions make for extra recoil without being much more effective.

3" and 3.5" offers more versatility. A 2 3/4" chamber will do for deer, ducks and geese etc.But I would look for a 3" gun. more loads, more ammo, more fun. Ive found the 3.5" to be unnecessary for most game in my area. unless your going to hunt allot of turkey.

i think 2 3/4 will be lots of gun for deer hunting with slugs. Can also be used for trap and upland birds. If you think you will be goose hunting (I think it is lots of gun over decoys) you might consider a 3 inch. But really, if you are looking for an affordable shotgun you will be fine with it

wow very fast response thank you all so much! You answered my question perfect thanks!

2 3/4 is it harder to find then 3 inch and other shot sizes? cheaper?

There are a lot of 2 3/4 inch 12 gauge pumps and semis for sale because they fall a little short on waterfowl with the advent of mandatory steel shot. Steel shot lacks the killing power of lead so the only solution is to put larger shot charges in each shell. So now 3 inch magnums and often 3 1/2 inch 12 gauge loads are favoured by duck and goose hunters.

I am learning shztloads about my 2 3/4" chambered Winger 870. Now I know my #### won't fall off if I don't have a 3" chambered 870. Besides, I don't even hunt waterfowl (yet & anymore these days).

My 870 Winger is for busting / dusting clays at the range! Oh ya... the zombies need to feel the love of the 870 Wingmaster. :D

Cheers,
Barney

I have the 3.5" 12ga's. Still find I use 2 3/4" shells outta them. When I feel I need more I reach for my 10ga. 2 3/4" killed fine before the 3" came about.
I use challenger slugs for deer/bear
Game bore 00buck if close it patterns like ####
Federal #4 buck for jacks/coyotes
Remington sportsman #2 steel for ducks/geese
Reloads 7/8oz #6 for turkey
Reloads 7/8oz #7.5 for bunnies/grouse/squirrel/ crows

2 3/4" works just fine

I have no use for 3.5" at all. i can, and do, get by quite nicely without shooting 3" shells for waterfowl by hunting better and shooting at long range less. In a 12 ga, and except for steel shot, there is nothing that a 3" or 3.5" shell can do that a 2.75" shell can't do as well. All else is marketing hype and inexperience.

I like the 3" for geese,(since the steel shot doesnt work near a well as lead) but for deer 2 3/4" slugs is all you need.Cheaper and alot easier on the shoulder.

Steel is lighter/less dense than lead so when it comes to hunting geese with steel...SPEED KILLS. I find 2 3/4" #1's that shoot at 1550fps are more lethal than the same brand in 3" #'1s that shoot 1300fps. Just be accurate. That being said I've shot hypersteel shotshells advertised at 1700+fps and they pattern like crap. IMHO you can hunt anything with 12g 2 3/4".
