17 HM2 Owners?

I had a beauty in a CZ 452 and picked up a savage as well, mine needs some trigger love but it shoots just fine. FS
 
I have an older fv as well had a 3-9 but put it on somthing else now not shure what i am going to go with. Its a great shooting gun but hey its a Savage.

I tend to use lower powers when out hunting so a 3-9 is all I need , all of my 22's have either the 3-9 EFX leupold or the 2-7 rimfire leupold.
A 6-18 Bushnell banner would work well and not too expensive. FS
 
No gophers here in Ontario...but I've been tempted to get a 17M2 for some time now. My .22s are pop-can busters mostly..so I'm not sure how a 17M2 would improve that experience.

Want one anyway. :)
 
The .17 HM2 has a devoted group of fans today and I expect will have a .22 hornet like rebound someday. It is an excellent round for squirrel hunters and actually is better than the .22 and HMR for that sort of shooting. To me, it's not preferred over the .22 LR for gophers only because my 10/22 is such a great gopher rig.
I have a 452 and Marlin SS bolt action, and both are very accurate shooters, no complaints about them.
The only reason the 17 HM2 is not more popular is that the .22 LR is so good, and there was a marketing disaster when Hornady introduced it.

Actually, the 17 HM2 should be all right for those Ontario Woodchucks if you shoot them from a reasonable range. In my younger days I shot plenty of them with a single shot Cooey .22 LR and the 17 HM2 is a much more effective round.

I bought a Marlin a couple of years ago, brand new, for a good price on the EE. It surprised me just how effective that little cartridge is, and several large Raccoons have found this out. With the number of shots you get at Gophers here in the West, the .22 rimfire LR is still my preference, but the HM2 goes along in the truck for those longer shots.

Another advantage is a low noise signature, and when you ask for permission to hunt, if you show the landowner the small cartridge that you use, they tend to think anything that tiny can not really cause much damage, so you get on more land. The fact that they break up when they hit something is also a plus. And they cost only about one half the price of the 17 HMR in my area.

A bit expensive for shooting tin cans or paper, but a highly effective hunting cartridge for smaller game or varmints.

i origionally bought mine for hunting rabbits and the occasional grouse. not much else. well maybe range days, and it also does make an interesting conversation round as i am seeing here. does anybody have a converted 10/22? or find one in lever action? i can only find them in bolt
 
I converted a 10/22. Haven't really had it out though, only shot about 25 rounds out of it, but was a lot of fun until a cheap set of rings ruined my day.
 
I use mine a lot for gophers. A 22 will certainly kill gophers fine but when i am out with friends with their 22s they are pretty amazed at the hit consistency at a little longer ranges. It was hard to find but well worth it.
The only problem is i like it so much ive added a boyds rimfire hunter stock, a nice sling, and now switched out the 3x9 simmons it came with for a 6x24 hawke. So my 350 dollar rifle is now closer to an 800 dollar rifle.
 
I have owned six rifles chambered in 17mach2, including a Marlin, a Savage a 10/22, a Ruger 77/17, and two Coopers. Four friends also own rifles in 17mach2, and my Cooper has proven to be the most accurate of them all. The factory 77/17 was the worst shooter of the bunch, but installing a Green Mountain heavy barrel greatly increased the accuracy. We all shoot Eley ammunition, as it has proven to be the most consistent

Now you see, I bought several K of both the Eley and the Hornady and found the Hornady to be more accurate out of both of my rifles, a Marlin and a Savage. Although I haven't run them over the chrono, the Hornady feels snappier as well.

I guess that's why we try all the ammo available.:)

The differences weren't great in my Savage and Marlin, or the 10/22, but in the Coopers, and in the 77/17 with the GM barrel, and in a friends CZ452, the Eley did considerably better accuracy wise. The Eley was also faster over the chronograph.

In a poll that was posted on RimfireCentral forums, the pollster asked what .17HM2 ammo shot best in their rifles and the results were:
