When GUN WORLD magazine was in its early years, Dangerous Dan Cotterman would do just about anything.
They did an article on "Guns of The Shadow", featuring FOUR 1911 Colts fitted with 30-round magazines, did the testing in costume, of course.
Another test they did was "Guns of The Lone Ranger", doing it as a serious article. They cast .900-fine US coin into bullets, wrecking a mould while they were at it, then went to the range to try out the ammo.... in costume, of course. They got away with it, too; if they were in Canada they would have been arrested and hauled off to the nearest asylum! Upshot of the whole thing was that the silver bullets were not very accurate, they ATE bullet-moulds and they were rough on barrels.
IIRC, that would have been late in their first year of publication.
